✧ I was with the Prophet ﷺ when a people came to him, clad in striped woolen cloaks, with swords hanging from their necks, wearing nothing but those cloaks. Most of them were from Mudar, rather all of them were from Mudar. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw the hardship, nakedness, and hunger they were in, his face changed. He entered his house, then went to the mosque and prayed Zuhr, then climbed a small pulpit, praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: “To proceed, Allah Almighty has revealed in His Book: ‘O people, fear your Lord, who created you from a single soul…’ to the end of the verse. ‘O you who believe, fear Allah and let every soul look to what it has sent forth for tomorrow…’ up to His saying: ‘they are the successful.’ Give charity before you are unable to give. A man should give charity from his dinar, a man should give charity from his dirham, a man should give charity from his wheat, a man should give charity from his dates, from his barley. Do not belittle anything of charity, even half a date.” Then a man from the Ansar stood with a purse in his hand and handed it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was on the pulpit. He took it, and joy was seen on his face. Then he said: “Whoever establishes a good practice that is acted upon has its reward and the like of the reward of those who act upon it, without any decrease in their rewards. And whoever establishes an evil practice that is acted upon bears its burden and the burden of those who act upon it after him, without any decrease in their burdens.” Then the people stood and dispersed, some with a dinar and some with a dirham, and he gathered it and distributed it among them.
