✧ We went out with the Messenger of God ﷺ on our riding camels from Madinah, and they were eating date stones. A figure appeared to him, so he said: "This is a man who has not had food for a long time." The Prophet ﷺ hastened the pace, and we hastened with him, and behold, there was a young man whose lips had fallen back from eating the bark of trees. He asked him: "From where have you come?" He said: "I want Muhammad ﷺ to pledge allegiance to him." He said: "I am Muhammad, I am the Messenger of God." He said: "Peace be upon you. Guide me to Islam, O Messenger of God." He said: "You testify that there is no god but God and that I am the Messenger of God, and you affirm what has come from God." He said: "I affirm." He said: "And you establish the prayer." He said: "I affirm." He said: "And you fast Ramadan." He said: "I affirm." He said: "And you perform the pilgrimage to the House." He said: "I affirm." Then the Messenger of God ﷺ turned away. Jarir said: We crowded around him as he began to describe Islam to him, watching to see where his description would end. Then he turned away, and we turned away. The foot of his young camel fell into the holes of jerboas, and its neck broke. The Messenger of God ﷺ turned around and said: "Bring the man to me." We found that his neck had snapped and he died. The Messenger of God ﷺ came to him, looked at him, then turned his face away from him and said: "Carry him to the water." We washed him, shrouded him, and perfumed him. Then he said: "Dig for him and make a niche grave (lahd), for the niche grave is for us and the trench grave (shaqq) is for others." He sat by his grave without speaking to us, then said: "Shall I tell you about this man's story? This is one who did little and was rewarded much—one of those about whom God ﷻ said: {Those who believe and do not mix their faith with wrong} (Qur'an 6:82). I turned away from him while two angels were stuffing the fruits of Paradise into his mouth."
