✧ Abu Talhah came to Umm Sulaym—she was the mother of Anas, and Abu Talhah was his stepfather—and said, “Do you have anything, O Umm Sulaym? I passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was teaching the people of the Suffah Surah al-Nisa’, and he had tied a stone over his stomach from hunger.” She said, “I had some barley which I ground. Then she sent me to the markets—and the markets were their walled gardens—so I brought them some firewood, and she made a flat loaf from it.” Then he said, “Do you have any condiment?” She said, “I had a small skin of ghee, but I do not know whether anything remains in it.” So she brought it to him and he squeezed it. He said, “Squeezing by two is more effective than squeezing by one.” So they squeezed it together and extracted about the size of a date. She greased the flat loaf, then he called me and said, “O Anas, do you know the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?” I said, “Yes.” He said, “I left him with his companions in the Suffah teaching them. Invite him, but do not invite anyone else with him. Be careful not to embarrass me.” So I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and when he saw me he said, “Perhaps your father sent you to us?” I said, “Yes.” Then he said to the people, “Go,” and they went. That day they were eighty men. He held my hand, and when I drew near the house, I pulled my hand from his. Abu Talhah began looking for me in the house and throwing stones at me, saying, “You have embarrassed me before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” Then he went out to him and told him the news. He said, “It will not harm you.” Then he ordered them and they sat down. Then he entered and we brought him the flat loaf. He said, “Is there any condiment?” Umm Sulaym said, “O Messenger of Allah, we had a small skin, and Abu Talhah and I squeezed it.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Bring it, for squeezing by three is more effective than squeezing by two.” So it was brought, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ squeezed it, and they extracted from it the size of a date. They wiped the flat loaf with it, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wiped it with his hand. Then he invoked blessing over it, then said, “Call ten for me.” So I called ten, and they ate from it until they were full to satiety. They kept entering ten by ten until all were full. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat down and we sat with him, and we ate until there was leftover.
