حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي خَلَفٍ ثنا يَعْلَى بْنُ شَبِيبٍ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَعْيَنَ بْنِ خُثَيْمٍ عَنْ قَيْلَةَ أُمِّ بَنِي أَنْمَارٍ قَالَتْ

رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عِنْدَ الْمَرْوَةِ يَحِلُّ مِنْ عُمْرَةٍ فَجَلَسْتُ إِلَيْهِ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي امْرَأَةٌ أَشْتَرِي وَأَبِيعُ فَرُبَّمَا أَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَبِيعَ السِّلْعَةَ فَأَسْتَامَ بِهَا أَكْثَرَ مِمَّا أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَبِيعَهَا بِهِ ثُمَّ أَنْقُصُ حَتَّى أَبِيعَهَا بِالَّذِي أُرِيدُ وَإِذَا أَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَشْتَرِيَ السِّلْعَةَ أَعْطَيْتُ بِهَا أَقَلَّ مِمَّا أُرِيدُ أَنْ آخُذَهَا بِهِ ثُمَّ أَزِيدُ حَتَّى آخِذَهَا بِالَّذِي أُرِيدُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ لَا تَفْعَلِي يَا قَيْلَةُ إِذَا أَرَدْتِ أَنْ تَبِيعِي السِّلْعَةَ فَاسْتَامِي بِهَا الَّذِي تُرِيدِينَ أَنْ تَبِيعِي بِهِ أَعْطَيْتِ أَوْ مَنَعْتِ وَإِذَا أَرَدْتِ أَنْ تَشْتَرِي السِّلْعَةَ فَأَعْطِي بِهَا الَّذِي تُرِيدِينَ أَنْ تَأْخُذِيهَا بِهِ أُعْطَيْتِ أَوْ مُنِعْتِ

✧ I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at al-Marwah, having come out of ihram from an 'umrah. I sat by him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I am a woman who buys and sells. Sometimes I want to sell a commodity and I ask for it a price higher than what I intend to sell it for, then I reduce it until I sell it for what I intend. And when I want to buy a commodity, I offer for it less than what I intend to take it for, then I increase until I take it for what I intend." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do not do that, O Qaylah. When you want to sell a commodity, ask for it the price you intend to sell it for, whether you are given it or refused. And when you want to buy a commodity, offer for it the price you intend to take it for, whether you are given it or refused."
