حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْمَعْمَرِيُّ ثنا أَيُّوبُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْوَرَّاقُ الرَّقِّيُّ ثنا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ بَشِيرٍ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ وَإِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ قَالَ

دَخَلْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ فَجَلَسْتُ عِنْدَ الْمِنْبَرِ فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ فَجَلَسَ إِلَيَّ فَقَالَ هَلْ تَدُلُّنِي عَلَى رَجُلٍ يُحَدِّثُنِي عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَانْطَلَقَ بِي إِلَى فَاطِمَةَ بِنْتِ قَيْسٍ فَقَالَتْ قَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ فَسَمِعَ النَّاسُ أَنَّهُ قَامَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ فَأَقْبَلَ النَّاسُ يَشْتَدُّونَ وَكُنْتُ مِمَّنْ أَتَاهُ فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ حَدَّثَنِي تَمِيمٌ الدَّارِيُّ أَنَّ بَنِي عَمٍّ لَهُ رَكِبُوا فِي سَفِينَةٍ لَهُمْ فِي الْبَحْرِ تُجَّارًا فَضَرَبَتْ بِهِمُ الرِّيحُ إِلَى جَزِيرَةٍ فَخَرَجُوا أَوْ مَنْ خَرَجَ مِنْهُمْ هَلْ يَرَوْنَ أَحَدًا؟ حَتَّى لَقِيَهُمْ مَنْ غَطَّاهُ الشَّعْرُ مَا يَسْتَبِينُ مِنْهُ ذَاكَ أَذَكَرٌ أَمْ أُنْثَى قَالُوا الْخَبَرُ قَالَ الْخَبَرُ عِنْدَ صَاحِبِ هَذَا الدَّيْرِ فَأَنَا الْجَسَّاسُ فَأَتَوُا الدَّيْرَ فَإِذَا رَجُلٌ مُوقَرٌ بِالْحَدِيدِ فَسَأَلَهُمْ مِمَّنْ هُمْ؟ فَأَخْبَرُوهُ فَقَالَ مَا فَعَلَ نَبِيُّ الْعَرَبِ أَخْرَجَ بَعْدُ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ مَنْ يَتْبَعُهُ السَّفَلَةُ أَمْ أَشْرَافُ النَّاسِ قَالُوا يَتْبَعُهُ السُّفَهَاءُ قَالَ يَكْثُرُونَ أَمْ يَقِلُّونَ؟ قَالُوا يَكْثُرُونَ قَالَ يَرْجِعُ أَحَدٌ مِمَّنْ أَتَاهُ؟ قَالُوا لَا قَالَ ذَلِكَ خَيْرٌ لَهُمْ مَا فَعَلَتْ بُحَيْرَةُ الطَّبَرِيَّةِ هَلْ فِيهَا مَاءٌ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ مَا فَعَلَ نَخْلُ بَيْسَانَ هَلْ تَحْمِلُ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ مَا فَعَلَتْ عَيْنُ زُغَرٍ هَلْ فِيهَا مَاءٌ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ أَمَا أَنَّهُ لَوْ قَدْ آذَنَ لِي لَقَدْ وَطَأْتُ بِرِجْلِي هَذِهِ الْأَرْضَ كُلَّهَا غَيْرَ طَيْبَةَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «وَهَذِهِ طَيْبَةُ عَلَى كُلِّ نَقْبٍ مِنْهَا مَلَكٌ شَاهِرٌ سَيْفَهُ نَحْوَ الْعِرَاقِ مَا هُوَ نَحْوَ الْعِرَاقِ مَا هُوَ»

✧ I entered Madinah and sat near the pulpit. Then a man came and sat with me and said: Can you direct me to a man who will narrate to me from the Messenger of God ﷺ? So he took me to Fatimah bint Qays, and she said: The Messenger of God ﷺ stood on the pulpit, and the people heard that he stood on the pulpit, so the people came hastening. I was among those who came to him, and I heard him saying: Tamim al-Dari told me that cousins of his rode in a ship of theirs at sea as merchants, and the wind drove them to an island. So they went out, or those of them who went out—did they see anyone?—until they were met by someone whom hair covered so that it was not clear whether that one was male or female. They said: The news! He said: The news is with the master of this monastery, and I am al-Jassas. So they came to the monastery, and behold, there was a man heavily laden with iron. He asked them: From whom are you? So they told him. He said: What has the Prophet of the Arabs done? Has he come out yet? They said: Yes. He said: Do the lowly follow him or the nobles of the people? They said: The foolish follow him. He said: Are they increasing or decreasing? They said: They are increasing. He said: Does anyone return from among those who came to him? They said: No. He said: That is better for them. What did Buhayrat al-Tabariyyah do—does it have water? They said: Yes. He said: What did the date palms of Baysan do—do they bear fruit? They said: Yes. He said: What did the spring of Zughar do—does it have water? They said: Yes. He said: Indeed, if I were permitted, I would tread all this land with this foot of mine, except Taybah. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'And this is Taybah; on every pass of it is an angel with his sword drawn toward Iraq—it is not toward Iraq, it is not.'
