✧ The mount and perfume of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were in my charge. A man came to him asking for one of them, and he said: “That is up to Talhah b. ‘Ubayd Allah.” The man came to me and informed me, but I refused him. He returned to the Prophet ﷺ and asked him, and he replied to him with the same thing. He came to me and informed me, but I refused him. He went back to the Prophet ﷺ and said the same thing, then returned to me. I said to myself: He would not have sent him to me unless he wanted his need to be fulfilled. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was hardly ever asked for something without doing it. I said: That I should take charge of the Prophet’s own saddle is dearer to me than that I should take charge of his mount. So I handed it over to him. The Prophet ﷺ then intended to travel and ordered that a mount be saddled for him. He came to me and said: Which of the two saddles was dearer to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? I said: The one from Ta’if. So he saddled it for him, then brought it close to him. When it bolted with him, it stumbled, and he said: “Who saddled this?” They said: So-and-so. He said: “Return it to Talhah.” So it was returned to me. Talhah said: By Allah, I did not deceive anyone in Islam except him, so that the saddle of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would come back to me.
