✧ That the Prophet ﷺ sent an expedition to the outskirts of Mudar. They mentioned that they camped in a rocky land, and in the morning there was a man in a tent with sheep in his courtyard. They came and stood before him and said, “Protect us,” so he protected them with a sheep. They cooked from it, then he brought it out to them, and they found it insufficient. Then he said, “Nothing remains among my sheep with meat except a pregnant ewe or a ram.” So they sniffed and took a sheep from them. When they brought it out and they were burning in a hot day with no shade with them, they said, “His little flock in his tent,” and they said, “We are more entitled to the shade than these sheep.” So they came to him and said, “Bring out your sheep so we can seek shade.” He said, “If you bring them out, they will perish and cast their young, and I am a man who has believed in Allah and His Messenger, and I have prayed and given zakah.” So they brought out his sheep, and it was not long but an hour of the day before they bleated and cast their young. So he set off quickly until he came to the Prophet ﷺ and told him the news. The Prophet ﷺ became very angry, then said, “Sit until the people return.” When they returned, he gathered between them and him, and they successively lied to him, lie after lie. So the Prophet ﷺ was relieved, but when the Bedouin saw that, he said, “By Allah, Allah knows that I am truthful and they are liars, and perhaps Allah will inform you, O Messenger of Allah.” So it occurred to the Prophet ﷺ that he was truthful. Then he called them one by one, adjuring each man of them, and no man among them adjured except as the Bedouin said. So the Prophet ﷺ stood and said, “What carries you to follow one another in lying as moths follow one another into the fire? Lying is written against the son of Adam except for three traits: a man who lies to his wife to please her, a man who lies in the deceit of war, and a man who lies between two Muslim men to reconcile them.”
