حَدَّثَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ كَامِلٍ الْمِصْرِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ حَدَّثَنِي اللَّيْثُ حَدَّثَنِي يُونُسُ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي عُبَيْدُ بْنُ السَّبَّاقِ أَنَّ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ
أَخْبَرَتْنِي مَيْمُونَةُ زَوْجُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَصْبَحَ يَوْمًا وَاجِمًا قَالَتْ مَيْمُونَةُ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدِ اسْتَنْكَرْتُ هَيْأَتَكَ مُنْذُ الْيَوْمِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِنَّ جِبْرِيلَ كَانَ وَعَدَنِي أَنْ يَلْقَانِي اللَّيْلَةَ فَلَمْ يَلْقَنِي أَمَ وَاللهِ مَا أَخْلَفَنِي» قَالَتْ فَظَلَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمَهُ ذَاكَ عَلَى ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ وَقَعَ فِي نَفْسِهِ جِرْوُ كَلْبٍ تَحْتَ بِسَاطٍ لَنَا فَأَمَرَ بِهِ فَأُخْرِجَ ثُمَّ أَخَذَ بِيَدِهِ مَاءً فَنَضَحَ بِهِ مَكَانَهُ فَلَمَّا أَمْسَى لَقِيَهُ جِبْرِيلُ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «قَدْ كُنْتَ وَعَدْتَنِي أَنْ تَلْقَانِي الْبَارِحَةَ» قَالَ أَجَلْ وَلَكِنَّا لَا نَدْخُلُ بَيْتًا فِيهِ كَلْبٌ وَلَا صُورَةٌ وَأَصْبَحَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمَئِذٍ فَأَمَرَ بِقَتْلِ الْكِلَابِ حَتَّى أَنَّهُ لَيَأْمُرُ بِقَتْلِ كَلْبِ الْحَائِطِ الْكَبِيرِ وَيَتْرُكُ كَلْبَ الْحَائِطِ الصَّغِيرِ

✧ Maymuna, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, told me that the Messenger of God ﷺ woke up one day gloomy. Maymuna said: I said, “O Messenger of God, I have found your appearance strange today.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said, “Gabriel had promised me he would meet me tonight, but he did not meet me. By God, he has not broken his promise to me.” She said: The Messenger of God ﷺ remained so all that day. Then a puppy came to his mind under a mat of ours. He ordered it to be taken out, then he took some water in his hand and sprinkled it on its place. When evening came, Gabriel met him, and the Messenger of God ﷺ said to him, “You had promised me you would meet me last night.” He said, “Yes, but we do not enter a house containing a dog or an image.” That morning the Messenger of God ﷺ ordered the killing of dogs, even ordering the killing of the big dog of the large orchard, while leaving the dog of the small orchard.
