✧ The Prophet ﷺ passed by a dead sheep belonging to a freed slave woman of ours, which had been given to her as charity. He said, “What is wrong with the people of this [sheep] that they did not take its hide, tan it, and benefit from it?” They said, “O Messenger of God, it is dead.” He said, “Only its eating is forbidden.” It was said to Sufyan that Maʿmar does not say “and tan it” in it, and says that al-Zuhri rejected tanning. Sufyan said, “But I memorized it, and we only wanted from him this phrase that others transmitted: ‘Only its eating is forbidden.’” Sufyan sometimes did not mention Maymuna in it, but when he was asked about it, he said Maymuna in it.
