✧ I said: O Mother of the Believers, or O my mother, will you not tell me how it was—meaning the affair of the slander? She said: The Messenger of God ﷺ married me while I was playing in the rain in Makkah, and I had nothing that men desire, and I was six years old. When it reached me that he had married me, God cast modesty upon me. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ emigrated and I was with him, and I was brought to him, and he had come to me when I was nine years old. The Messenger of God set out on a journey and took me out with him. I was light in a howdah of mine that had curtains. When they departed, I sat in it, and they lifted it while I was inside, and they tied it on the back of the camel. They halted at a campsite. I went out for my need and returned, and they had hastened to depart. I sat in the howdah, and they had seen me when I moved the curtains. When I sat in it, I struck my hand on my chest and found that I had forgotten a necklace that was with me. So I went out quickly seeking it, and returned, and the people had departed. I saw nothing but dust from afar. They had placed the howdah on the camel's back, thinking I was in it because of my lightness. Then there was a man holding the head of his camel. I said: Who is the man? He said: Safwan b. al-Mu'attal al-Sulami. Are you the Mother of the Believers? I said: Yes. He said: Indeed we belong to God and to Him we return. I said: Turn your face away from me and put your foot on the foreleg of your camel. He said: I will do so, with the blessing of an eye and honor. She said: Then I caught up with the people when they halted, and he went and set me down by the howdah. The people looked at me and I was unaware. She said: I noticed the coldness of my parents and the coldness of the Messenger of God, and I did not know what had been said, until my servant or my foster-daughter entered and said such-and-such. She said: A man of the Muhajirun said to me: How heedless you are! A shivering fever seized me, and my mother took every garment in the house and threw it over me. The Messenger of God consulted some of his companions and said: "What do you think?" Some of them said: There are many women, and you can find a replacement. Some said: You are the Messenger of God, and revelation descends upon you, and our affair follows your affair. Some said: By God, God will make it clear, so do not hasten. She said: My father's face became as if yellow orpiment had been poured on it. She said: The Messenger of God entered upon me and saw what I was in. He said: "What is wrong with her?" My mother said: Because of what is with her, because of what you all said. And it was said. He did not speak and did not say anything. She said: That increased me in what I was already feeling. She said: He came to me and said: "Fear God, O Aisha. If you have done any of this, repent to God, for God accepts repentance from His servants and forgives evil deeds." She said: I sought the name of Ya'qub but could not recall it, so I said: Only I say as the father of Yusuf said: "So patience is beautiful, and God is the one sought for help against what you describe." "I only complain of my anguish and my sorrow to God, and I know from God what you do not know." She said: While the Messenger of God was with his companions and his face was as if orpiment had been melted on it, until revelation descended upon him. When revelation came to him, he did not blink, and his companions knew that revelation was coming to him. They began to look at his face, and it was beaming and brightening. When the revelation was completed, he said: "Rejoice, O Abu Bakr, God has sent down the excuse of your daughter and her innocence." He went to her and gave her the good news. She said: And he recited to him what had been revealed concerning me. She said: Abu Bakr came hurrying, almost falling. She said: I said: By the praise of God, not by the praise of your companion from whom you came. The Messenger of God came and sat at my head, and took my hand. I pulled my hand away from him. Abu Bakr struck me and said: Will you pull your hand away from the Messenger of God, or do such a thing to the Messenger of God? The Messenger of God laughed. She said: This was my affair.
