✧ I set out as an emigrant to the Messenger of God ﷺ. When the people came, some standing and some sitting, the Messenger of God ﷺ did not see anyone sitting without approaching him and asking, “Do you need anything?” He began with the first row, then the second, then the third, until he came near me and said, “Do you need anything?” I said, “Yes, O Messenger of God.” He said, “What is your need?” I said, “Islam.” He said, “It is better for you.” He said, “Will you emigrate?” I said, “Yes.” He said, “A desert emigration or a permanent emigration?” I said, “Which of them is better?” He said, “The permanent emigration is that you stay with the Messenger of God ﷺ, and the desert emigration is that you return to your desert, and you must hear and obey in your hardship and ease, in what you dislike and what you like, and when others are preferred over you.” He said, “So I stretched out my hand to him and pledged allegiance to him.” He said, “He made an exception for me when I did not make one for myself, saying, ‘In what you are able.’” He said, “The Messenger of God ﷺ called for the expedition to Tabuk. I went out to my family and found my father sitting in the sun with his back to it. I greeted him with the greeting of Islam. He said, ‘Have you become a Sabian?’ I said, ‘I have submitted.’ He said, ‘Perhaps God will make it good for you and us.’ I accepted that from him. While I was with him, my sister came to me and greeted me. I said, ‘O sister, provide me with the provision a woman gives her brother going on a campaign.’ She brought me dough in a bucket, and the bucket was in a provision bag. I set out, and the Messenger of God ﷺ had already departed. I began calling out, ‘Is there anyone who will carry a man in exchange for his share?’ An old man from the Ansar called out to me and said, ‘His share is ours on condition that we carry him alternating behind us and that his food is with us.’ I said, ‘Yes, go with the blessing of God.’ I went out with the best companion. He gave me a mount beyond what I had stipulated and favored me with food besides what he ate with it, until God granted us spoils. I obtained some young camels and drove them until I came to him while he was in his tent. I called him and he came out and sat on a saddlebag from his camel’s saddlebags. Then he said, ‘Drive them away from you.’ I drove them away. Then he said, ‘Drive them toward you.’ I drove them toward him. He said, ‘I do not see your young camels except as noble.’ I said, ‘They are only your share of the spoils that I stipulated for you.’ He said, ‘Take your young camels, O son of my brother, for we did not intend anything other than your share.’
