✧ I tried to be seen by the Prophet ﷺ at the mosque of al-Khayf. His companions said to me, “Move away, O Wathilah,” meaning, get out of the Prophet’s ﷺ sight. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Leave him, for he has only come to ask.” So I drew near and said, “May my father and mother be your ransom, O Messenger of God. Give us a ruling about a matter we can take from you after you are gone.” He said, “Let your own self help you.” I said, “How can I do that?” He said, “Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt, even if the muftis give you a fatwa.” I said, “How can I know that?” He said, “Place your hand over your heart, for the heart is at rest with what is lawful and is not at rest with what is unlawful. The scrupulousness of a Muslim is that he leaves the small matter for fear of falling into the major one.” I said, “May my father and mother be your ransom, what is bias?” He said, “It is when a man helps his people in wrongdoing.” I said, “Who is the greedy?” He said, “The one who seeks a livelihood from an unlawful source.” I said, “Who is the scrupulous?” He said, “The one who halts at what is doubtful.” I said, “Who is the believer?” He said, “The one from whom people feel safe regarding their wealth and their lives.” I said, “Who is the Muslim?” He said, “The one from whose tongue and hand people are safe.” I said, “Which struggle is most excellent?” He said, “A word of justice before a tyrannical ruler.”
