✧ A man forced himself upon a woman in the darkness of dawn while she was heading to the mosque, overpowering her. She sought help from a man who passed by her, and her attacker fled. Then a group of people with numbers passed by her, and she sought their help. They caught up with the one she had sought help from, while the other had outrun them. They brought him to the Prophet ﷺ. She told him that he had forced himself upon her, and the people told him that they had caught him running away. He said: I was only helping her against her attacker, and these people caught me and seized me. She said: He is lying; he is the one who forced himself upon me. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Take him and stone him.” A man from the people stood up and said: Do not stone him. I am the one who did the deed with her. So he confessed. Thus three gathered before the Messenger of God ﷺ: the one who forced himself upon her, the one who helped her, and the woman. He said: “As for you, you have been forgiven,” and he said good words to the one who helped her. ʿUmar said: Stone the one who confessed to adultery. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Indeed, he has repented to God with a repentance that if the people of Yathrib were to repent with it, it would be accepted from them.”
