✧ Rifa'a b. Zayd came as a delegate to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he wrote a document for him in which was: "In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. This is a document from Muhammad, the Messenger of God, to Rifa'a b. Zayd. I have sent him to his people generally and to those who join them, calling them to God and to His Messenger. Whoever believes is in the party of God and in the party of His Messenger ﷺ, and whoever turns away has protection for two months." When he came to his people, they answered him. Then he traveled until he stopped at the Harra of al-Rajla'. He had not stayed long when Dihya al-Kalbi came from Qurayza, where the Messenger of God ﷺ had sent him, until when he was in one of their valleys called Shinan, with merchandise of his, al-Hunayd b. 'Uways and his father al-'Uways al-Duba'i—a branch of Judham—raided him and seized everything he had. Then a group of Rifa'a's people went to him, and among those who came was al-Nu'man b. Abi Ji'al. They met them and fought, and Qurra b. Ashqar al-Dala'i threw a stone at al-Nu'man b. Abi Ji'al, hitting his heel and bloodying it, and said, "I am the son of Uthala!" Then al-Nu'man b. Abi Ji'al shot him with an arrow, hitting his knee, and said, "I am the son of Iqala!" Hassan b. Milla al-Dabbi had accompanied Dihya al-Kalbi before that and taught him the Opening of the Book. They recovered what was in their hands and returned it to Dihya. Then Dihya came to the Prophet ﷺ and told him their news, and asked him for the blood of al-Hunayd and his father 'Uways. That is what stirred up Zayd and Judham. So the Messenger of God ﷺ sent Zayd b. Haritha and sent an army with him. Ghatafan, Judham, Wa'il, and those of Salman and Sa'd b. Hudhayl had already set out when Rifa'a came to them with the letter of the Prophet ﷺ. He stopped at the Harra of al-Rajla', and Rifa'a was at Kura' al-Ghamim, with him a horseman from Banu al-Dubayb, while the rest of Banu al-Dubayb were at Wadi Madariq on the side of the Harra.
