✧ 'Amr b. Bakr b. Bakkar al-Qa'nabi narrated to me: Mujashi' b. 'Amr b. Hassan al-Asadi narrated to us: al-Layth b. Sa'd narrated to us from 'Asim b. 'Umar b. Qatada, from Mahmud b. Labid, from Mu'adh b. Jabal that a son of his died, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote to him consoling him for his son. He wrote to him: "In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. From Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, to Mu'adh b. Jabal. Peace be upon you. I praise Allah, besides whom there is no god, to you. To proceed: May Allah make your reward great, inspire you with patience, and grant us and you gratitude. For our souls, our wealth, and our families are among Allah's pleasant gifts and His deposited trusts. He lets us enjoy them until a term and takes them back at a known time. We ask Him for gratitude for what He gives and patience when He tests. Your son was among Allah's pleasant gifts and His deposited trusts. Allah let you enjoy him in happiness and joy, and took him from you with a great reward: prayer, mercy, and guidance, if you seek recompense. So be patient, and do not let your anguish nullify your reward, lest you regret. Know that anguish does not bring back the dead nor repel grief. What is to come is as if it has already happened. Peace."
