حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُسْلِمٍ الْكَشِّيُّ ثنا سَهْلُ بْنُ بَكَّارٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ثنا مُسَدَّدٌ قَالَا ثنا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ قَالَ
مَرَّ بِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَنَا عَلَى حِمَارٍ فَقَالَ «يَا مُعَاذُ تَدْرِي مَا حَقُّ اللهِ عَلَى الْعِبَادِ وَمَا حَقُّ الْعِبَادِ عَلَى اللهِ؟» قُلْتُ اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ «حَقُّ اللهِ عَلَى الْعِبَادِ أَنْ يَعْبُدُوهُ وَلَا يُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا وَحَقُّ الْعِبَادِ عَلَى اللهِ إِذَا فَعَلُوا ذَلِكَ أَنْ لَا يُعَذِّبَهُمْ»

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by me while I was on a donkey, and he said, “O Mu'adh, do you know what Allah's right upon the servants is and what the servants' right upon Allah is?” I said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said, “Allah's right upon the servants is that they worship Him and associate nothing with Him, and the servants' right upon Allah is that if they do that, He will not punish them.”
