✧ “What makes you weep?” I said: “By God, I am not weeping over any worldly thing I might obtain from you, nor over any kinship between me and you, but I weep over what I used to hear from you; it is now departing.” He said: “Do not weep. Knowledge and faith—their affair is that whoever seeks them finds them. Seek knowledge where Ibrāhīm sought it, for he asked God and was not forgetful. And after me, seek it from four men; if you do not find it with them, then search among the people. Seek knowledge from ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd, Abū al-Dardāʾ, Salmān, and ʿAbdullāh b. Salām. And beware of the deviation of the wise man, for Satan casts misguided wisdom upon the tongue of a wise man. Take knowledge when it comes to you.” He said: “I said to Muʿādh b. Jabal: ‘How can I know the deviation of the wise man and the judgment of the hypocrite?’ He said: ‘Indeed, truth is light.’ And beware of making hasty judgments in matters. Some men among the companions of Muḥammad ﷺ said one day: ‘Our sons are better than us; they were born upon Islam and did not associate partners, whereas we had associated partners.’ That reached the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he said: ‘We are better than our sons, and our sons are better than their sons, and our sons’ sons are better than their sons’ sons.’”
