✧ While we were riding with the Prophet ﷺ, his mount went ahead, then my mount caught up with his until I thought his mount recognized the tread of my mount, until my knee bumped his knee. I said, 'O Messenger of God, I have wanted to ask you many times, but I am prevented by this verse: {O you who believe, do not ask about things which, if they are shown to you, will distress you}.' He said, 'What is it, O Mu'adh?' I said, 'The deed that admits to Paradise and keeps me away from the Fire.' He said, 'You have asked about a great thing, and yet it is easy: the testimony that there is no god but God and that I am the Messenger of God, establishing prayer, giving zakat, pilgrimage to the House, and fasting Ramadan.' Then he said, 'Shall I inform you of the head of this matter, its pillar, and its peak? Jihad.' Then he said, 'Fasting is a shield, and charity extinguishes sins.' Then he said, 'Shall I tell you what gives people mastery over all that?' He took hold of his tongue and placed it between two of his fingers. I said, 'O Messenger of God, will everything we say be recorded against us?' He said, 'May your mother be bereaved of you! Do people ever fall on their faces in the Fire except because of what their tongues reap? You remain safe as long as you are silent, but when you speak, it is written either for you or against you.'
