حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ صَالِحٍ ثنا نُعَيْمُ بْنُ حَمَّادٍ ثنا عَبْدُ الْمُؤْمِنِ بْنُ خَالِدٍ الْحَنَفِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ بُرَيْدَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ بَلَغَنِي
أَنَّ مُعَاذَ بْنَ جَبَلٍ أَخَذَ الشَّيْطَانَ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَقُلْتُ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكَ أَخَذْتَ الشَّيْطَانَ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ ضَمَّ إِلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ تَمْرَ الصَّدَقَةِ فَجَعَلْتُهُ فِي غُرْفَةٍ لِي فَكُنْتُ أَجِدُ فِيهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ نُقْصَانًا فَشَكَوْتُ ذَلِكَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ لِي «هُوَ عَمِلُ الشَّيْطَانِ فَارْصُدْهُ» فَرَصَدْتُهُ لَيْلًا فَلَمَّا ذَهَبَ هَوِيٌّ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ أَقْبَلَ عَلَى صُورَةِ الْفِيلِ فَلَمَّا انْتَهَى إِلَى الْبَابِ دَخَلَ مِنْ خَلَلِ الْبَابِ عَلَى غَيْرِ صُورَتِهِ فَدَنَا مِنَ التَّمْرِ فَجَعَلَ يَلْتَقِمُهُ فَشَدَدْتُ عَلِيَّ ثِيَابِي فَتَوَسَّطتُّهُ فَقُلْتُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ يَا عَدُوَّ اللهِ وَثَبْتَ إِلَى تَمْرِ الصَّدَقَةِ فَأَخَذْتَهُ وَكَانُوا أَحَقَّ بِهِ مِنْكَ لَأَرْفَعَنَّكَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَيَفْضَحَكَ فَعَاهَدَنِي أَنْ لَا يَعُودَ فَغَدَوْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ لِي «مَا فَعَلَ أَسِيرُكَ؟» قُلْتُ عَاهَدَنِي أَنْ لَا يَعُودَ قَالَ «إِنَّهُ عَائِدٌ فَارْصُدْهُ» فَرَصَدْتُهُ اللَّيْلَةَ الثَّانِيَةَ فَصَنَعَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ وَصَنَعَتُ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ وَعَاهَدَنِي أَنْ لَا يَعُودَ فَخَلَّيْتُ سَبِيلَهُ ثُمَّ غَدَوْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ لِأُخْبِرَهُ فَإِذَا مُنَادِيهِ يُنَادِي أَيْنَ مُعَاذٌ؟ فَقَالَ لِي «يَا مُعَاذُ مَا فَعَلَ أَسِيرُكَ؟» فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ فَقَالَ «إِنَّهُ عَائِدٌ فَارْصُدْهُ» فَرَصَدْتُهُ اللَّيْلَةَ الثَّالِثَةَ فَصَنَعَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ وَصَنَعَتُ بِهِ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ وَقُلْتُ يَا عَدُوَّ اللهِ عَاهَدْتَنِي مَرَّتَيْنِ وَهَذِهِ الثَّالِثَةُ لَأَرْفَعَنَّكَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ فَيَفْضَحَكَ فَقَالَ إِنِّي شَيْطَانٌ ذُو عِيَالٌ وَمَا أَتَيْتُكَ إِلَّا مِنْ نَصِيبِينَ وَلَوْ أَصَبْتُ شَيْئًا دُونَهُ مَا أَتَيْتُكَ وَلَقَدْ كُنَّا فِي مَدِينَتِكُمْ هَذِهِ حَتَّى بُعِثَ صَاحِبُكُمْ فَلَمَّا نَزَلَتْ عَلَيْهِ آيَتَانِ أَنْفَرَتَانَا مِنْهَا فَوَقَعْنَا بِنَصِيبِينَ لَا تُقْرَآنِ فِي بَيْتٍ إِلَّا لَمْ يَلِجْ فِيهِ الشَّيْطَانُ ثَلَاثًا فَإِنْ خَلَّيْتَ سَبِيلِي عَلَّمْتَكَهُمَا قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ آيَةُ الْكُرْسِيِّ وَآخَرُ سُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ مِنْ قَوْلِهِ {آمَنَ الرَّسُولُ بِمَا أُنْزِلَ} إِلَى آخِرِهَا فَخَلَّيْتُ سَبِيلَهُ ثُمَّ غَدَوْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ لِأُخْبِرَهُ فَإِذَا مُنَادِيهِ يُنَادِي أَيْنَ مُعَاذُ بْنُ جَبَلٍ؟ فَلَمَّا دَخَلْتُ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ لِي «مَا فَعَلَ أَسِيرُكَ؟» فَقُلْتُ عَاهَدَنِي أَنْ لَا يَعُودَ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ بِمَا قَالَ فَقَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «صَدَقَ الْخَبِيثُ وَهُوَ كَذُوبٌ» قَالَ فَكُنْتُ اقْرَأُهُمَا عَلَيْهِ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ فَلَا أَجِدُ فِيهِ نُقْصَانًا

✧ Muadh b. Jabal seized the devil during the time of the Messenger of God ﷺ. I came to him and said: “I have heard that you seized the devil during the time of the Messenger of God ﷺ.” He said: “Yes. The Messenger of God ﷺ handed over to me the dates of the zakat, and I put them in a room of mine. I would find a shortfall in them every day, so I complained about that to the Messenger of God ﷺ. He told me: ‘It is the work of the devil, so lie in wait for him.’ I lay in wait for him one night. When a portion of the night had passed, he came in the form of an elephant. When he reached the door, he slipped in through the crack of the door in a form other than his own. He approached the dates and began gobbling them. I tightened my clothes around me, then I grabbed him around the middle, and I said: ‘I bear witness that there is no god but God and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. O enemy of God, you have gotten at the dates of the zakat and taken them, while they are more entitled to them than you. I will certainly bring you before the Messenger of God ﷺ so that he will expose you.’ He made a pact with me that he would not return. In the morning I went to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he said to me: ‘What happened to your captive?’ I said: ‘He made a pact with me that he would not return.’ He said: ‘He will return, so lie in wait for him.’ So I lay in wait for him the second night. He did the same as before, and I did the same as before, and he made a pact with me that he would not return, so I let him go. Then I went to the Messenger of God ﷺ to inform him, and there was his caller calling out: ‘Where is Muadh?’ He said to me: ‘O Muadh, what happened to your captive?’ I told him, and he said: ‘He will return, so lie in wait for him.’ So I lay in wait for him the third night. He did the same as before, and I did the same to him, and I said: ‘O enemy of God, you made a pact with me twice, and this is the third time. I will certainly bring you before the Messenger of God so that he will expose you.’ He said: ‘I am a devil with dependents, and I only came to you from Nasibin. If I could find something other than this, I would not have come to you. We used to be in this city of yours until your companion was sent. When two verses were sent down upon him that drove us out of it, we settled in Nasibin. They are not recited in any house except that the devil does not enter it for three days. If you let me go, I will teach them to you.’ I said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘The Throne Verse and the end of Surat al-Baqarah, from His saying, “The Messenger has believed in what was sent down to him,” to the end of it.’ So I let him go. Then I went to the Messenger of God ﷺ to inform him, and there was his caller calling out: ‘Where is Muadh b. Jabal?’ When I entered upon him, he said to me: ‘What happened to your captive?’ I said: ‘He made a pact with me that he would not return,’ and I told him what he had said. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to me: ‘The wicked one spoke the truth, though he is a liar.’ He said: So after that I would recite those two verses over it and would not find any shortfall in it.
