✧ That the affair of this community in its latter time will return to being brothers openly and enemies in secret. And we seek refuge with God from our letter descending other than the place it descended from our hearts, for we wrote it only as sincere counsel to you. Peace be upon you. Then 'Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ wrote back to them: From 'Umar b. al-Khattab to Abu 'Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah and Mu'adh b. Jabal ؓ. Peace be upon you both. Now then, your letter reached me in which you mention that you had admonished me and that my own affairs are important to me. I have become the one entrusted with the affair of this community, its red and its black; the noble and the lowly, the enemy and the friend sit before me, and for everyone there is a share of justice. You wrote: Look how you are in that situation, O 'Umar. Indeed, there is no power and no strength for them in that except through God. You wrote warning me of what the nations before us were warned of, and it is ancient. Indeed, the alternation of night and day, with the death terms of people, brings near every distant thing and brings every new thing and brings every promised thing until people come to their abodes of Paradise or the Fire. You wrote warning me that the affair of this community will return in its latter time to being brothers openly and enemies in secret. But you are not those people, and this is not the time of that; that is a time when desire and fear appear, when some people's desire for one another will be for the good of their worldly affairs. You wrote seeking refuge with God from your letter descending other than the place it descended from your hearts, and that you wrote it as sincere counsel to me. You have spoken truly, so do not stop writing to me, for I cannot do without you. Peace be upon you both.
