✧ I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a bringer of good news from his expedition came to him and informed him of the victory that Allah had granted his expedition and the conquest that Allah had opened for them. He said: “O Messenger of Allah, while we were pursuing the people, whom Allah Almighty had defeated, I caught up with a man with my sword. When he felt that the sword was about to strike him, he ran and said, ‘I am a Muslim, I am a Muslim.’” He said: “Did you kill him?” He replied: “O Messenger of Allah, he only sought protection.” He said: “Why did you not split open his heart to see whether he was truthful or lying?” He said: “If I had split open his heart, how would I know? Is his heart anything but a piece of flesh?” He said: “Neither do you know what is in his heart, nor did you believe his tongue.” He said: “O Messenger of Allah, ask forgiveness for me.” He said: “I will not ask forgiveness for you.” He said: Then that man died and they buried him, but in the morning he was on the surface of the earth. Then they buried him again, and in the morning he was on the surface of the earth, three times. When they saw that, they were ashamed and humiliated by what had happened to him, so they carried him and threw him into one of those mountain passes.
