حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثنا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنِ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ كَثِيرٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ حَلْحَلَةَ الدُّؤَلِيِّ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ ابْنَ شِهَابٍ حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ الْحُسَيْنِ حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّهُ حِينَ قَدِمَ الْمَدِينَةَ مِنْ عِنْدِ يَزِيدَ بْنِ مُعَاوِيَةَ مَقْتَلَ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ لَقِيَهُ الْمِسْوَرُ بْنُ مَخْرَمَةَ فَقَالَ
لَهُ هَلْ لَكَ مِنْ حَاجَةٍ تَأْمُرُنِي بِهَا؟ فَقُلْتُ لَا فَقَالَ هَلْ أَنْتَ مُعْطِيَّيَ سَيْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ فَإِنِّي أَخَافُ أَنْ يَغْلِبَكَ الْقَوْمُ عَلَيْهِ وَأَيْمُ اللهِ لَئِنْ أَعْطَيْتَنِي لَا يُخلَصْ إِلَيْهِ أَبَدًا حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ فِيهِ نَفْسِي إِنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ خَطَبَ بِنْتَ أَبِي جَهْلٍ عَلَى فَاطِمَةَ فَسَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَخْطُبُ النَّاسَ فِي ذَلِكَ عَلَى مِنْبَرِهِ هَذَا وَأَنَا يَوْمَئِذٍ مُحْتَلِمٌ وَقَالَ «إِنَّ فَاطِمَةَ مِنِّي وَأَنَا أَخَافُ أَنْ تُفْتَتَنَ فِي دِينِهَا» ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ صِهْرَ بَنِي عَبْدِ شَمْسٍ وَأَثْنَى عَلَى أَبِي الْعَاصِ فِي مُصَاهَرَتِهِ إِيَّاهُ قَالَ «فَصَدَقَنِي وَوَعَدَنِي فَوَفَّى لِي وَإِنِّي لَسْتُ أُحَرِّمُ حَلَالًا وَلَا أُحِلُّ حَرَامًا وَلَكِنْ وَاللهِ لَا تَجْتَمِعُ بَيْنَ بِنْتِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَابْنَةِ عَدُوِّ اللهِ»

✧ He said to him: 'Do you have any need you would command me with?' I said: 'No.' He said: 'Will you give me the sword of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? I fear that the people may overpower you for it. By Allah, if you give it to me, no one will ever reach it until my soul reaches here. 'Ali b. Abi Talib proposed to the daughter of Abu Jahl in addition to Fatimah. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressing the people about that on this pulpit of his, and I was then a youth. He said: 'Fatimah is from me, and I fear that she will be tempted in her religion.' Then he mentioned the in-law relationship of Banu 'Abd Shams and praised Abu al-'As in his marriage alliance with him. He said: 'He was truthful to me and promised me and fulfilled it. I do not forbid what is lawful nor make lawful what is forbidden, but by Allah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the daughter of the enemy of Allah will never be joined.'
