Makhramah and Marwan b. al-Hakam, each of them confirming the other, they said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out at the time of al-Hudaybiyyah with some ten and a few hundred of his companions, until when they were at Dhu al-Hulayfah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ garlanded the sacrificial animal and marked it, then entered ihram for 'umrah. He sent ahead of him a spy from Khuza'ah to inform him about Quraysh. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ traveled until when he was at Ghadir al-Ashtat, near 'Usfan, his Khuza'i spy came to him and said: 'I left Ka'b b. Lu'ayy and 'Amir b. Lu'ayy, and they have gathered the Ahabish against you and gathered forces against you, and they will fight you and bar you from the Sacred House.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Advise me. Do you think I should raid the dependents of these who have helped them, and capture them? If they stay put, they stay bereaved and robbed, and if they come, it will be a neck cut off by Allah. Or do you think we should head for the House, and whoever bars us from it, we fight?' Abu Bakr said: 'Allah and His Messenger know best, O Prophet of Allah. We have only come as pilgrims, and we have not come to fight anyone, but whoever comes between us and the House, we will fight him.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Then set out in the afternoon.' So they set out, until when they were on part of the road, the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Khalid b. al-Walid is at al-Ghamim with a cavalry of Quraysh as an advance guard, so take the right.' By Allah, Khalid was not aware of them until he saw the dust of the army, so he set off galloping as a warner to Quraysh. The Prophet ﷺ traveled until when he was at the mountain pass from which they would descend upon them, his mount knelt down. The people said: 'Hal! Hal!' They said: 'Al-Qaswa' has become stubborn.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Al-Qaswa' has not become stubborn, and that is not her nature, but she was held back by the One who held back the elephant.' Then he said: 'By the One in whose hand is my soul, they will not ask me for any plan by which they honor the sacred things of Allah but that I will grant it to them.' Then he prodded her and she leaped up with him, and he turned away from them until he stopped at the farthest part of al-Hudaybiyyah at a small water hole. The people were only drawing water from it sparingly. It was not long before the people exhausted it. They complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ of thirst. He drew an arrow from his quiver, then commanded them to place it in the water. By Allah, it kept gushing for them with enough to drink until they left it. While they were thus, Budayl b. Warqa' al-Khuza'i came to them with a group of his people from Khuza'ah, and they were the trusted advisers of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ among the people of Tihamah. He said: 'I left Ka'b b. Lu'ayy and 'Amir b. Lu'ayy, and they have camped at the water holes of al-Hudaybiyyah, and with them are the camels with young, and they will fight you and bar you from the House.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'We have not come to fight anyone, but we have come as pilgrims. War has worn down Quraysh and harmed them. If they wish, I will make a truce with them for a period, and they should leave the way open between me and the people. If I prevail, then if they wish to enter into what the people have entered, they may do so, and if not, they will have rested. But if they refuse, then by the One in whose hand is my soul, I will fight them for this cause of mine until my neck is severed, or Allah will surely carry out His command.' Budayl said: 'I will convey to them what you say.' He went until he came to Quraysh and said: 'We have come to you from this man, and we heard him say something. If you wish, we will present it to you.' Their foolish ones said: 'We have no need for you to tell us anything about him.' Those of sound judgment among them said: 'Give us what you heard him say.' He said: 'I heard him say such and such,' and he told them what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said. 'Urwah b. Mas'ud al-Thaqafi stood up and said: 'O people, am I not the father?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Am I not the child?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Do you suspect me?' They said: 'No.' He said: 'Do you not know that I called upon the people of 'Ukaz, and when they failed me, I came to you with my family and children and those who obeyed me?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'This man has offered you a plan of right guidance, so accept it and let me go to him.' They said: 'Go to him.' He went to him and began to speak with the Prophet ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said something similar to what he had said to Budayl. 'Urwah said at that: 'O Muhammad, do you think that if you exterminate your people, have you heard of anyone among the Arabs who destroyed his own family before you? And if it is the other way, by Allah, I see faces and I see a rabble of people likely to flee and abandon you.' Abu Bakr said: 'Suck the clitoris of al-Lat! Would we flee and abandon him?' He said: 'Who is this?' He said: 'Abu Bakr.' He said: 'By the One in whose hand is my soul, were it not for a favor you owe me that I have not repaid, I would answer you.' He kept speaking with the Prophet ﷺ, and whenever he spoke to him, he took hold of his beard. Al-Mughirah b. Shu'bah was standing at the head of the Prophet ﷺ with a helmet, and with him was a sword. Whenever 'Urwah reached his hand to the beard of the Prophet ﷺ, he struck his hand with the scabbard of the sword and said: 'Take your hand away from the beard of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' 'Urwah raised his head and said: 'Who is this?' He said: 'This is al-Mughirah b. Shu'bah.' He said: 'O treacherous one, am I not striving to rectify your treachery?' Al-Mughirah had accompanied a people in the Jahiliyyah, killed them, and taken their wealth, then came and embraced Islam. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'As for Islam, I accept it, but as for the wealth, I have nothing to do with it.' Then 'Urwah began to gaze at the companions of the Prophet ﷺ with his eyes. He said: 'By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not spit but that it fell into the hand of one of them and he rubbed it on his face and skin, and when he commanded them, they hastened to his command, and when he performed ablution, they almost fought over his ablution water, and when he spoke, they lowered their voices in his presence, and they did not stare at him out of reverence for him.' 'Urwah returned to his companions and said: 'O people, by Allah, I have gone as an envoy to kings, and I have gone as an envoy to Caesar, Kisra, and the Negus. By Allah, I have never seen a king whose companions honor him as the companions of Muhammad honor Muhammad. By Allah, he did not spit but that it fell into the palm of one of them and he rubbed it on his face and skin, and when he commanded them, they hastened to his command, and when he performed ablution, they almost fought over his ablution water, and when they spoke, they lowered their voices in his presence, and they did not stare at him out of reverence for him. He has offered you a plan of right guidance, so accept it.' A man from Banu Kinanah said: 'Let me go to him.' They said: 'Go to him.' When he appeared before the Prophet ﷺ and his companions, the Prophet ﷺ said: 'This is so-and-so, and he is from a people who honor sacrificial camels, so send them out to him.' They were sent out to him, and the people met him reciting the talbiyah. When he saw that, he said: 'Glory be to Allah, it is not right for these people to be barred from the House.' When he returned to his companions, he said: 'I saw the sacrificial camels garlanded and marked, and I do not think they should be barred from the House.' A man among them called Mikraz b. Hafs said: 'Let me go to him.' They said: 'Go to him.' When he appeared before them, the Prophet ﷺ said: 'This is Mikraz b. Hafs, and he is a wicked man.' He began to speak with the Prophet ﷺ. While he was speaking with him, Suhayl b. 'Amr came and said: 'Come, let us write a treaty between us and you.' He called for the scribe. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Write: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.' Suhayl said: 'As for "the Most Gracious," by Allah, I do not know what it is, but write: In Your name, O Allah, as you used to write.' The Muslims said: 'By Allah, we will not write it except with: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Write: In Your name, O Allah.' Then he said: 'This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, has agreed upon.' Suhayl said: 'By Allah, if we knew that you were the Messenger of Allah, we would not have barred you from the House nor fought you. But write: Muhammad b. 'Abd Allah.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'By Allah, I am the Messenger of Allah, even if you deny me. Write: Muhammad b. 'Abd Allah.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'On condition that you leave the way open between us and the House so that we may circumambulate it.' Suhayl said: 'By Allah, the Arabs will never say that we were taken by force, but you may have it next year.' So he wrote. Suhayl said: 'And on condition that no man from us comes to you, even if he follows your religion, but that you return him to us.' The Muslims said: 'Glory be to Allah, how can he be returned to the polytheists when he has come as a Muslim?' While they were thus, Abu Jandal b. Suhayl b. 'Amr came dragging his chains, having escaped from the lower part of Makkah, until he threw himself among the Muslims. Suhayl said: 'This, O Muhammad, is the first one with whom I make you agree that you return him to me.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'We have not yet concluded the treaty.' He said: 'By Allah, then I will never make peace with you for anything.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Then grant him to me.' He said: 'I will not grant him to you.' He said: 'Yes, then do it.' He said: 'I will not do it.' Mikraz said: 'Yes, we grant him to you.' Abu Jandal said: 'O assembly of Muslims, shall I be returned to the polytheists when I have come as a Muslim? Do you not see what I have suffered?' He had been severely tortured for the sake of Allah. 'Umar b. al-Khattab said: 'By Allah, I never doubted since I embraced Islam except on that day. I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: Are you not truly the Prophet of Allah?' He said: 'Yes.' I said: 'Are we not on the truth and our enemy on falsehood?' He said: 'Yes.' I said: 'Then why do we accept humiliation in our religion?' He said: 'I am the Messenger of Allah, and I do not disobey Him, and He will help me.' I said: 'Did you not tell us that we would come to the House and circumambulate it?' He said: 'Yes, but did I tell you that you would come to it this year?' I said: 'No.' He said: 'You will come to it and circumambulate it.' Then I went to Abu Bakr and said: 'O Abu Bakr, is this not truly the Prophet of Allah?' He said: 'Yes.' I said: 'Are we not on the truth and our enemy on falsehood?' He said: 'Yes.' I said: 'Then why do we accept humiliation in our religion?' He said: 'O man, he is the Messenger of Allah, and he does not disobey his Lord, and He will help him. So hold fast to his stirrup until you die. By Allah, he is upon the truth.' I said: 'Did he not tell us that we would come to the House and circumambulate it?' He said: 'Yes, but did he tell you that you would come to it this year?' I said: 'No.' He said: 'You will come to it and circumambulate it.' When he finished the treaty, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his companions: 'Arise and slaughter, then shave.' By Allah, not one of them stood up until he said it three times. When none of them stood up, he got up and entered upon Umm Salamah and mentioned to her what he had encountered from the people. Umm Salamah said: 'O Prophet of Allah, do you want that? Go out, then do not speak a word to any of them until you slaughter your sacrificial camel and call your barber to shave you.' He got up and went out, and did not speak to anyone among them until he did that: he slaughtered his sacrificial camel and called his barber, who shaved him. When they saw that, they arose and slaughtered, and some of them began to shave others, until some of them almost killed others out of grief. Then believing women came, and Allah ﷻ revealed: {O you who believe, when believing women come to you as emigrants} until He reached {the ties of the disbelieving women}. That day 'Umar divorced two wives he had in polytheism. One of them was married by Mu'awiyah b. Abi Sufyan and the other by Safwan b. Umayyah. Then the Prophet ﷺ returned to Madinah. Abu Basir, a man from Quraysh, came, and he was a Muslim. They sent two men after him and said: 'The pact you made with us.' So he handed him over to the two men. They went out until when they reached Dhu al-Hulayfah with him, they dismounted to eat from some dates of theirs. Abu Basir said to one of the two men: 'By Allah, I think this sword of yours, O so-and-so, is good.' The other drew it and said: 'Yes, by Allah, it is good. I have tried it and tried it again.' Abu Basir said: 'Show me, let me look at it.' He handed it to him, and he struck him with it until he died. The other fled until he came to Madinah and entered the mosque running. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him, he said: 'This man has seen something terrifying.' When he reached the Prophet ﷺ, he said: 'By Allah, my companion has been killed, and I will be killed.' Abu Basir came and said: 'O Prophet of Allah, by Allah, Allah has fulfilled your protection. You returned me to them, then Allah saved me from them.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Woe to his mother, a kindler of war, if only he had someone.' When he heard that, he knew that he would return him to them, so he went out until he reached the coast. Abu Jandal b. Suhayl escaped from them and joined Abu Basir. No man from Quraysh who had embraced Islam left but that he joined Abu Basir, until a band of them gathered. By Allah, they did not hear of any caravan of Quraysh headed to Syria but that they intercepted it, killed them, and took their wealth. Quraysh sent to the Prophet ﷺ, adjuring him by Allah and kinship, to send to them, and whoever came to him would be safe. The Prophet ﷺ sent for them, and Allah ﷻ revealed: {And it is He who restrained their hands from you and your hands from them in the interior of Makkah} until He reached {the arrogance of the Jahiliyyah}. Quraysh's arrogance was that they did not acknowledge that he was the Prophet of Allah, did not acknowledge 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful,' and came between him and the House.
