حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ ثنا عَفَّانُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا فَهِدُ بْنُ عَوْفٍ أَبُو رَبِيعَةَ قَالَا ثنا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ كُلَيْبٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْجُوَيْرِيَةِ الْجَرْمِيِّ قَالَ
كُنَّا بِأَرْضِ الرُّومِ فَأُمِّرَ عَلَيْنَا رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْ بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ يُقَالُ لَهُ مَعْنُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ السُّلَمِيُّ قَالَ فَأَصَبْتُ جَرَّةً حَمْرَاءَ فِيهَا دَنَانِيرٌ فَأَتَيْتُهُ بِهَا فَخَمَّسَهَا وَقَالَ لَوْلَا أَنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «لَا نَفْلَ إِلَّا مِنَ الْخُمُسِ» لَأَعْطَيْتُكَ قَالَ فَعَرَضَ عَلِيَّ مِنْ نَصِيبِهِ فَقُلْتُ لَا حَاجَةَ لِي فِيهِ

✧ We were in the land of the Romans, and a man from the Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ from Banu Sulaym, called Ma'n b. Yazid al-Sulami, was appointed as our commander. He said: I acquired a red jar containing dinars, so I brought it to him. He took a fifth of it and said: 'Were it not that I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: "There is no extra share (nafal) except from the fifth," I would have given it to you.' He said: Then he offered me from his own share, but I said: 'I have no need of it.'
