حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ رِشْدِينَ الْمِصْرِيُّ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ ثنا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ عَنْ أَبِي قَبِيلٍ أَنَّ ابْنَ مَوْهَبٍ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ كَانَ عِنْدَ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ مَرْوَانُ فَكَلَّمَهُ فِي حَوَائِجِهِ فَقَالَ

اقْضِ حَاجَتِي يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فَوَاللهِ إِنَّ مُؤْنَتِي لَعَظِيمَةٌ إِنِّي أَصْبَحْتُ أَبَا عَشَرَةٍ وَأَخَا عَشَرَةٍ وَعَمَّ عَشَرَةٍ فَلَمَّا أَدْبَرَ مَرْوَانُ وَابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ جَالِسٌ مَعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ عَلَى سَرِيرِهِ فَقَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ أَنْشُدُكَ اللهَ يَا ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ أَمَا تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «إِذَا بَلَغَ بَنُو الْحَكَمِ ثَلَاثِينَ رَجُلًا اتَّخَذُوا آيَاتِ اللهِ بَيْنَهُمْ دُوَلًا وَعِبَادَهُ خَوَلًا وَكِتَابَهُ دَغَلًا فَإِذَا بَلَغُوا تِسْعَةً وَتِسْعِينَ وَأَرْبَعَمِائَةٍ كَانَ هَلَاكُهُمْ أَسْرَعَ مِنَ الثَّمَرَةِ» ؟ قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ فَذَكَرَ مَرْوَانُ حَاجَةً لَهُ فَرَدَّ مَرْوَانُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ إِلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ فَكَلَّمَهُ فِيهَا فَلَمَّا أَدْبَرَ قَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ أَنْشُدُكَ اللهَ يَا ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ أَمَا تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ ذَكَرَ هَذَا فَقَالَ «أَبُو الْجَبَابِرَةِ الْأَرْبَعَةِ؟» فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ

✧ “Fulfill my need, O Commander of the Believers, for by Allah my burden is great: I have become father of ten, brother of ten, and uncle of ten.” When Marwān turned away while Ibn ʿAbbās was sitting with Muʿāwiyah on his couch, Muʿāwiyah said: “I adjure you by Allah, O Ibn ʿAbbās, do you not know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘When the sons of al-Ḥakam reach thirty men, they will take the signs of Allah among them as spoils, His servants as slaves, and His Book as corruption. When they reach four hundred and ninety-nine, their destruction will be quicker than the ripening of fruit’?” Ibn ʿAbbās said: “O Allah, yes.” Then Marwān mentioned a need of his, and Marwān b. ʿAbd al-Malik referred it back to Muʿāwiyah, and he spoke to him about it. When he turned away, Muʿāwiyah said: “I adjure you by Allah, O Ibn ʿAbbās, do you not know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned this one and said: ‘Abū al-Jabābirah al-Arbaʿah (father of the four tyrants)’?” Ibn ʿAbbās said: “O Allah, yes.”
