حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْجُذُوعِيُّ ثنا أَبُو الْخَطَّابِ زِيَادُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ثنا الْهَيْثَمُ بْنُ الرَّبِيعِ ثنا سِرَارُ بْنُ مُجَشَّرٍ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ الْعَنَزِيُّ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ حَسَّانٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ قَالَ

لَمَّا بَايَعَ مُعَاوِيَةُ لِيَزِيدَ حَجَّ فَمَرَّ بِالْمَدِينَةِ فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ فَقَالَ إِنَّا قَدْ بَايَعْنَا يَزِيدَ فَبَايِعُوا فَقَامَ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ ؓ فَقَالَ أَنَا وَاللهِ أَحَقُّ بِهَا مِنْهُ فَإِنَّ أَبِي خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَبِيهِ وَجَدِّي خَيْرٌ مِنْ جَدِّهِ وَإِنَّ أُمِّي خَيْرٌ مِنْ أُمِّهِ وَأَنَا خَيْرٌ مِنْهُ فَقَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ «أَمَّا مَا ذَكَرْتَ أَنَّ جَدَّكَ خَيْرٌ مِنْ جَدِّهِ فَصَدَقْتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ بْنِ حَرْبٍ وَأَمَّا مَا ذَكَرْتَ أَنَّ أُمَّكَ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أُمِّهِ فَصَدَقْتَ فَاطِمَةُ بِنْتُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ خَيْرٌ مِنْ بِنْتِ مِجْدَلٍ وَأَمَّا مَا ذَكَرْتَ أَنَّ أَبَاكَ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَبِيهِ فَقَدْ قَارَعَ أَبُوهُ أَبَاكَ فَقَضَى اللهُ لِأَبِيهِ عَلَى أَبِيكَ وَأَمَّا مَا ذَكَرْتَ أَنَّكَ خَيْرٌ مِنْهُ فَلَهُوَ أَرِبُ مِنْكُ وَأَعْقَلُ مَا يَسُرُّنِي بِهِ مِثْلُكَ أَلْفٌ»

✧ When Mu‘āwiyah pledged allegiance to Yazīd, he performed Hajj and passed by Madinah. He addressed the people and said, “We have pledged allegiance to Yazīd, so pledge allegiance.” Al-Ḥusayn b. ‘Alī ؓ stood up and said, “I, by Allah, am more entitled to it than him. My father is better than his father, my grandfather is better than his grandfather, my mother is better than his mother, and I am better than him.” Mu‘āwiyah said, “As for your saying that your grandfather is better than his grandfather, you have spoken the truth: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is better than Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb. As for your saying that your mother is better than his mother, you have spoken the truth: Fāṭimah bt. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is better than the daughter of Majdal. As for your saying that your father is better than his father, his father contended with your father, and Allah ruled in favor of his father over your father. As for your saying that you are better than him, he is more capable than you and more intelligent. What would please me with the like of you is a thousand.”
