حَدَّثَنَا الْمِقْدَامُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ ثنا أَسَدُ بْنُ مُوسَى ثنا الْمَسْعُودِيُّ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ أَبِي الْأَحْوَصِ

أَنَّ عَوْفَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ يَعْنِي أَبَاهُ أَتَى رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَعَلَيْهِ أَطْمَارٌ فَقَالَ «يَا عَوْفُ بْنَ مَالِكٍ» أَلَيْسَ تُنْتَجُ إِبِلُكَ وَهِيَ صَحِيحَةٌ آذَانُهَا فَتَعْمَدَ إِلَى بَعْضِهَا فَتَجْدَعَهَا فَتَقُولَ هَذِهِ بَحِيرَةٌ وَتَعْمَدَ إِلَى بَعْضِهَا فَتَشُقَّ آذَانَهَا ثُمَّ تَقُولُ هَذِهِ صُرُمٌ فَلَا تَفْعَلْ سَاعِدُ اللهِ أَشَدُّ مِنْ سَاعِدِكَ وَمُوسَى اللهِ أَحَدُّ كُلُّ مَا آتَاكَ اللهُ حَلَالٌ وَلَا تُحَرِّمْ مِنْ مَالِكَ شَيْئًا ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ «يَا عَوْفُ بْنَ مَالِكٍ غُلَامُكَ الَّذِي يُطِيعُكَ وَيَتَّبِعُ أَمَرَكَ أَحَبُّ إِلَيْكَ أَمْ غُلَامُكَ الَّذِي لَا يُطِيعُكَ وَلَا يَتَّبِعُ أَمَرَكَ؟» قَالَ بَلْ غُلَامِي الَّذِي يُطِيعُنِي وَيَتَّبِعُ أَمْرِي قَالَ «فَكَذَلِكُمْ أَنْتُمْ عِنْدَ رَبِّكُمْ تَعَالَى»

✧ That ‘Awf b. Mālik, meaning his father, came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wearing worn-out clothes. He said, "O ‘Awf b. Mālik, do your camels not give birth when their ears are sound, and then you go to some of them and slit their ears and say, 'This is a baḥīrah,' and you go to some of them and split their ears and then say, 'This is a ṣurum'? Do not do so. Allah's forearm is stronger than your forearm, and Allah's razor is sharper. Everything Allah has given you is lawful, so do not make anything of your wealth unlawful." Then he said to him, "O ‘Awf b. Mālik, which of your slaves is more beloved to you: the one who obeys you and follows your command, or the one who does not obey you and does not follow your command?" He said, "Rather my slave who obeys me and follows my command." He said, "Thus are you before your Lord, Exalted is He."
