حَدَّثَنَا إِدْرِيسُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ الْعَطَّارُ الْبَغْدَادِيُّ ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ عَنْ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمٍ قَالَ
لَمَّا كَتَبَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ سَهْمَ ذِي الْقُرْبَى وَبَنِي هَاشِمٍ وَبَنِي الْمُطَّلِبِ أَتَيْتُهُ أَنَا وَعُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَؤُلَاءِ بَنُو هَاشِمٍ لَا يُنْكَرُ فَضْلُهُمْ لِمَكَانِكَ الَّذِي جَعَلَكَ اللهُ مِنْهُمْ أَرَأَيْتَ أَعْطَيْتَ إِخْوَانَنَا مِنْ بَنِي الْمُطَّلِبِ وَمَنَعْتَنَا وَإِنَّمَا نَحْنُ وَهُمْ مِنْكَ بِمَنْزِلَةٍ قَالَ «إِنَّهُمْ لَمْ يُفَارِقُونِي فِي جَاهِلِيَّةٍ وَلَا إِسْلَامٍ وَإِنَّمَا بَنُو هَاشِمٍ وَبَنُو الْمُطَّلِبِ شَيْءٌ وَاحِدٌ وَشَبَّكَ بَيْنَ أَصَابِعِهِ»

✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ allotted the share of the near relatives and the Banū Hāshim and the Banū al-Muṭṭalib, I and ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān came to him and said, “O Messenger of Allah, these are the Banū Hāshim — their excellence is not denied because of the position in which Allah has placed you among them. What do you think? You have given to our brothers from the Banū al-Muṭṭalib and withheld from us, when we and they are in the same standing in relation to you.” He said, “They did not separate from me in the time of ignorance or in Islam. Indeed, the Banū Hāshim and the Banū al-Muṭṭalib are one and the same,” and he interlaced his fingers.
