✧ ʿImrān b. Ḥuṣayn said: We were discussing righteousness in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he began to narrate to us, saying: “Among the nations before you there was a devoted worshiper, an owner of a hermitage, called Jurayj. He had a mother who would come to him and call him, and he would look down at her and speak to her. One day she came to him while he was in his prayer, facing it, and she called him.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ imitated her, placing his hand on his forehead. She kept calling him, raising her head and placing her hand on her forehead: “O Jurayj, O Jurayj,” three times, each time three times. All the while Jurayj said, “O Lord, my mother or my prayer?” She became angry and said, “O Allah, do not let Jurayj die until he looks at the faces of prostitutes.” He said, “The daughter of the king of the village became pregnant and gave birth to a boy. They said to her, ‘Who did this to you? Who is your companion?’ She said, ‘He is the owner of the hermitage, Jurayj.’ He was unaware until he heard the axes at the base of his hermitage. He began asking them, ‘Woe to you, what is the matter with you?’ but they did not answer him. When he saw that, he took a rope and let himself down, and they began dragging him by the nose, beating him, and saying, ‘Hypocrite, you deceive people with your deeds!’ He said to them, ‘Woe to you, what is the matter with you?’ They said, ‘You are the companion of the king’s daughter whom you got pregnant.’ He said, ‘What did she do?’ They said, ‘She gave birth to a boy.’ He said, ‘Is the boy alive?’ They said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘Turn away from me.’ So they turned away, and he prayed two rakʿahs, then went to a tree, took a branch from it, then came to the boy while he was in his cradle, struck him with that branch, and said, ‘O tyrant, who is your father?’ He said, ‘My father is so-and-so the shepherd.’ They said, ‘If you wish, we will rebuild your hermitage with gold, and if you wish, with silver.’ He said, ‘Restore it as it was.’ Abū Ḥarb claimed that none spoke in the cradle except three: ʿĪsā ibn Maryam, the witness of Yūsuf, and the companion of Jurayj.”
