✧ ʿAkkāf b. Wadāʿa al-Hilālī came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, “O ʿAkkāf, do you have a wife?” He said, “No.” He said, “Nor a slave girl?” He said, “No.” He said, “And you are healthy and well-off?” He said, “Yes, praise be to Allah.” He said, “Then you are among the brothers of the devils. Either you will be one of the monks of the Christians, and then you are one of them, or you will be one of us, and then do as we do. For part of our sunna is marriage. The worst of you are your unmarried, and the most contemptible of your dead are your unmarried. Do you seek to entice the devils? He has no weapon against the righteous among men and women more effective than celibacy, except for the married—those are the purified, the ones kept free from indecency. Woe to you, O ʿAkkāf! They are the female companions of David, the female companions of Joseph, and the female companions of Kursuf.” ʿAṭiyya said, “Who is Kursuf, O Messenger of Allah?” He said, “A man among the Children of Israel who lived on one of the coasts of the sea, fasting by day and standing in prayer by night, never slackening in fasting or prayer. After that he disbelieved in Allah the Almighty because of a woman he fell in love with, and he abandoned the worship of his Lord, Mighty and Exalted. Then Allah reached him despite what had passed from him, and Allah turned to him in mercy. Woe to you, O ʿAkkāf! Marry, for you are among the sinners.” ʿAkkāf said, “I will not leave, O Messenger of Allah, until you marry me to whomever you wish.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “I have married you, in the name of Allah and with His blessing, to Karīma bt. Kulthūm al-Ḥimyarī.”
