✧ One day the Prophet ﷺ went out and a man from the Anṣār met him and said, “O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you. I am distressed by what I see on your face—what is it?” He said, and the Prophet ﷺ looked at the man’s face for a moment then said, “Hunger.” The man went off running, or nearly running, until he reached his house and searched for food but found nothing. Then he went to the Banū Qurayẓa and hired himself out for a date for every bucket he drew, until he gathered a handful or a cupped hand of dates. Then he returned with the dates and found the Prophet ﷺ still sitting in the same gathering. He placed them before him and said, “Eat, O Messenger of Allah.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Where did you get these dates?” He told him the story, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, “I think you love Allah and His Messenger.” He said, “Yes, by the One who sent you with the truth, you are dearer to me than myself, my children, my family, and my wealth.” He said, “Then be patient with poverty and prepare for affliction with protective covering. By the One who sent me with the truth, they are swifter to the one who loves me than water descending from the top of a mountain to its foot.”
