حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ التُّسْتَرِيُّ وَأَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْمُعَلَّى الدِّمَشْقِيُّ قَالَا ثنا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ ثنا صَدَقَةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ ثنا ابْنُ جَابِرٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ سُلَيْمَ بْنَ عَامِرٍ يَقُولُ
سَمِعْتُ عَوْفَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ الْأَشْجَعِيَّ يَقُولُ نَزَلْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مَنْزِلًا فَاسْتَيْقَظْتُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَإِذَا أَنَا لَا أَرَى فِي الْعَسْكَرِ شَيْئًا أَطْوَلَ مِنْ مُؤْخِرَةِ الرَّحْلِ قَدْ لُصِقَ كُلُّ إِنْسَانٍ وَبَعِيرُهُ بِالْأَرْضِ فَقُمْتُ أَتَخَلَّلُ النَّاسَ حَتَّى دَفَعْتُ إِلَى مُضْطَجِعِ النَّبِيِّ فَإِذَا هُوَ لَيْسَ فِيهِ فَوَضَعْتُ يَدَيَّ عَلَى الْفِرَاشِ فَإِذَا هُوَ بَارِدٌ فَقُمْتُ فَخَرَجْتُ أَتَخَلَّلُ النَّاسَ وَأَقُولُ إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ ذُهِبَ بِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى خَرَجْتُ مِنَ الْعَسْكَرِ كُلِّهِ فَبَصَرْتُ بِسَوَادٍ فَمَضَيْتُ إِلَيْهِ فَرَمَيْتُ بِحَجَرٍ فَمَضَيْتُ إِلَى السَّوَادِ وَإِذَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ جَبَلٍ وَأَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ الْجَرَّاحِ وَإِذَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِينَا صَوْتٌ كَدَوِيِّ الرَّحَى وكَصَوْتِ الْعَصَا تَصِفَهَا الرِّيَاحُ فَقَالَ بَعْضُنَا لِبَعْضٍ أَيْ قَوْمٌ اسْتَوُوا حَتَّى تَصْحُوا أَوْ يَأْتِيَكُمْ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَبِثْنَا مَا شَاءَ اللهُ ثُمَّ نَادَى «أَثَمَّ مُعَاذُ بْنُ جَبَلٍ وَأَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ الْجَرَّاحِ وَعَوْفُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ؟» قُلْنَا نَعَمْ فَأَقْبَلَ إِلَيْنَا حَتَّى كُنَّا مَعَهُ لَا نَسْأَلَهُ شَيْئًا وَلَا يُخْبِرْنَا حَتَّى قَعَدَ عَلَى فِرَاشِهِ فَقَالَ «أَتَدْرُونَ مَا خَيَّرَنِي رَبِّي اللَّيْلَةَ؟» قُلْنَا اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ «فَإِنَّهُ خَيَّرَنِي بَيْنَ أَنْ يَدْخُلَ نِصْفُ أُمَّتِي الْجَنَّةَ وَبَيْنَ الشَّفَاعَةِ فَاخْتَرْتُ الشَّفَاعَةَ» قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ادْعُ اللهَ أَنْ يَجْعَلَنَا مِنْ أَهْلِهَا قَالَ «هِيَ لِكُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ»

✧ I heard ʿAwf b. Malik al-Ashjaʿi say: We encamped with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at a place. I woke up during the night and saw nothing in the camp taller than the back of a saddle; every person and his camel were flattened to the ground. I got up and walked among the people until I reached the Prophet's resting place, and he was not there. I placed my hand on the bed, and it was cold. I got up and went out walking among the people, saying: "Indeed we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has been taken away." I went out of the whole camp and saw a dark shape, so I went toward it and threw a stone. I continued to the dark shape, and there were Muʿadh b. Jabal and Abu ʿUbaydah b. al-Jarrah. And before us there was a sound like the rumbling of a mill and like the sound of a staff stirred by the winds. Some of us said to others: "O people, stand firm until you are healthy or your Messenger of Allah ﷺ comes to you." We waited as long as Allah willed. Then he called out: "Are Muʿadh b. Jabal, Abu ʿUbaydah b. al-Jarrah, and ʿAwf b. Malik there?" We said: "Yes." He came toward us until we were with him, and we did not ask him anything nor did he tell us anything until he sat on his bed. Then he said: "Do you know what my Lord offered me tonight?" We said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said: "He offered me the choice between half of my ummah entering Paradise and intercession, and I chose intercession." We said: "O Messenger of Allah, ask Allah to make us among its people." He said: "It is for every Muslim."
