حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْوَاسِطِيُّ وَعَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلَ قَالَا ثنا زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ يَحْيَى زَحْمَوَيْهِ ثنا فَرَجُ بْنُ فَضَالَةَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ الزُّبَيْدِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي رَاشِدٍ الْحُبْرَانِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبْدِ كُلَالٍ عَنْ عَوْفِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَشْجَعِيِّ قَالَ
سَافَرْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ سَفَرًا فَنَزَلْنَا حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ اللَّيْلُ أَرِقَتْ عَيْنَاي فَلَمْ يَأْتِنِي النَّوْمُ فَقُمْتُ فَإِذَا لَيْسَ فِي الْعَسْكَرِ دَابَّةٌ إِلَّا وَاضِعٌ خَدِّهِ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ وَإِنَّ أَرْفَعَ شَيْءٍ فِي نَفْسِي لِمَوْضِعُ مُؤْخِرَةِ الرَّحْلِ فَقُلْتُ لَآتِيَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَلَا كَلَّ مَا اللَّيْلَةُ حَتَّى يُصْبِحَ فَخَرَجْتُ أَتَخَلَّلُ الرِّحَالَ حَتَّى دَفَعْتُ إِلَى رَحَلِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَإِذَا هُوَ لَيْسَ فِي رَحْلِهِ فَخَرَجْتُ أَتَخَلَّلُ الرِّحَالَ حَتَّى خَرَجْتُ مِنَ الْعَسْكَرِ فَإِذَا أَنَا بِسَوَادٍ فَتَيَمَّمْتُ ذَلِكَ السَّوَادَ فَإِذَا هُوَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ الْجَرَّاحِ وَمُعَاذُ بْنُ جَبَلٍ فَقَالَا لِي مَا الَّذِي أَخْرَجَكَ؟ قُلْتُ الَّذِي أَخْرَجَكُمَا فَإِذَا نَحْنُ بِغَيْطَةٍ مِنَّا غَيْرَ بَعِيدٍ فَمَشَيْنَا إِلَى الْغَيْطَةِ فَإِذَا نَحْنُ نَسْمَعُ فِيهَا كَدَوِيِّ النَّحْلِ أَوْ كَحَفِيفِ الرِّيَاحِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «أَهَهُنَا أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ الْجَرَّاحِ؟» قُلْنَا نَعَمْ قَالَ «وَمُعَاذُ بْنُ جَبَلٍ؟» قُلْنَا نَعَمْ قَالَ «وَعَوْفُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ؟» قُلْنَا نَعَمْ فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُمْنَا لَا نَسْأَلُهُ عَنْ شَيْءٍ وَلَا يَسْأَلُنَا عَنْ شَيْءٍ فَرَجَعَ إِلَى رَحْلِهِ فَقَالَ «أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِمَا خَيَّرَنِي رَبِّي آنِفًا؟» قُلْنَا بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ «خَيَّرَنِي بَيْنَ أَنْ يَدْخُلَ ثُلُثُ أُمَّتِي الْجَنَّةَ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ وَلَا عَذَابٍ وَبَيْنَ الشَّفَاعَةِ» قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا الَّذِي اخْتَرْتَ؟ قَالَ «اخْتَرْتُ الشَّفَاعَةَ» قُلْنَا جَمِيعًا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ اجْعَلْنَا مِنْ أَهْلِ شَفَاعَتِكَ فَقَالَ لَنَا «إِنَّ شَفَاعَتِي لِكُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ»

✧ We traveled with the Messenger of God ﷺ on a journey and stopped. When night came, my eyes grew restless and sleep did not come to me. I got up, and there was no beast in the camp but had its cheek on the ground—and the highest thing in my mind was the place of the rear of the saddle. I said, “I will certainly go to the Messenger of God ﷺ, for I cannot sleep at all tonight until morning.” I went out, threading my way through the saddles, until I reached the saddle of the Messenger of God ﷺ. He was not at his saddle, so I went out threading my way through the saddles until I left the camp. Then I saw a dark shape and made for it. It was Abu ʿUbaydah b. al-Jarrah and Muʿadh b. Jabal. They said to me, “What brought you out?” I said, “The same as brought you out.” Then we found ourselves near a thicket not far from us. We walked to the thicket, and we heard in it something like the hum of bees or the rustling of winds. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Is Abu ʿUbaydah b. al-Jarrah here?” We said, “Yes.” He said: “And Muʿadh b. Jabal?” We said, “Yes.” He said: “And ʿAwf b. Malik?” We said, “Yes.” The Messenger of God ﷺ came out to us. We stood without asking him about anything, and he did not ask us about anything. Then he returned to his saddle and said: “Shall I tell you what my Lord offered me just now?” We said, “Yes, O Messenger of God.” He said: “He gave me the choice between a third of my community entering Paradise without reckoning or punishment, and intercession.” We said, “O Messenger of God, what did you choose?” He said: “I chose intercession.” We all said, “O Messenger of God, make us among the people of your intercession.” He said to us: “My intercession is for every Muslim.”
