✧ That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not levy the fifth on spoils, and that a man from the reinforcements was his companion in the campaign of Mu’tah, on the border of Syria. They met the enemy, and a Byzantine among them began to press hard upon the Muslims, mounted on a chestnut horse with a gilded saddle, a belt smeared with gold, and a sword adorned with gold. He would raid them, and that reinforcement man sought an opportunity against him until he passed by him, so he hamstrung his horse, and he fell. Then he fell upon him with the sword and killed him. When Allah defeated the Byzantines, clear testimony was established for the reinforcement man that he had killed him, so Khalid gave him his sword and a fifth of his property. Awf said: I spoke to Khalid b. al-Walid and said: Do you not know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ruled the spoils belong to the killer? He said: Yes, but I considered it too much. Awf said: And there was an exchange of words between me and him, so I said: By Allah, I will inform the Messenger of Allah ﷺ of what you have done. Awf said: When we gathered before the Prophet ﷺ, Awf mentioned what had happened from him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “What prevented you from giving it to him?” Khalid said: I considered it too much. He said: “Give it to him.” Awf said: Then I said: How do you see it now, O Khalid? Have I not fulfilled for you what I promised you? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ became angry and said to Khalid: “Do not give it to him,” and said: “Will you not leave my commanders to me?”
