حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْحَرَّانِيُّ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ عَنْ أَبِي الْأَسْوَدِ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ فِي قِصَّةِ الْفَتْحِ قَالَ

وَفَرَّ عِكْرِمَةُ بْنُ أَبِي جَهْلٍ عَامِدًا إِلَى الْيَمَنِ وَأَقْبَلَتْ أُمُّ الْحَكِيمِ بِنْتُ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ وَهِيَ يَوْمَئِذٍ مَسْلَمَةٌ وَهِيَ تَحْتَ عِكْرِمَةَ بْنِ أَبِي جَهْلٍ فَاسْتَأْذَنَتْ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فِي طَلَبِ زَوْجِهَا فَأَذِنَ لَهَا وَأَمَّنَهُ فَخَرَجَتْ بِعَبْدٍ لَهَا رُومِيٍّ فَرَاوَدَهَا عَنْ نَفْسِهَا فَلَمْ تَزَلْ تُمَنِّيهِ وَتُقَرِّبُ لَهُ حَتَّى قَدِمَتْ عَلَى أُنَاسٍ مِنْ عَكٍّ فَاسْتَعَانَتْهُمْ عَلَيْهِ فَأَوْقَفُوهُ فَأَدْرَكَتْ زَوْجَهَا بِبَعْضِ تِهَامَةَ وَقَدْ كَانَ رَكِبَ فِي سَفِينَةٍ فَلَمَّا جَلَسَ فِيهَا نَادَى بِاللَّاتِ وَالْعُزَّى فَقَالَ أَصْحَابُ السَّفِينَةِ لَا يَجُوزُ هَاهُنَا أَحَدٌ يَدْعُو شَيْئًا إلَّا اللهَ وَحْدَهُ مُخْلِصًا فَقَالَ عِكْرِمَةُ «وَاللهِ لَئِنْ كَانَ فِي الْبَحْرِ إِنَّهُ لَفِي الْبِرِّ وَحْدَهُ فَأَقْسَمَ بِاللهِ لَأَرْجِعَنَّ إِلَى مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ» فَرَجَعَ عِكْرِمَةُ مَعَ امْرَأَتِهِ فَدَخَلَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يُبَايِعُهُ وَقَبِلَ مِنْهُ وَدَخَلَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ هُذَيْلٍ حِينَ هُزِمَتْ بَنُو بَكْرٍ عَلَى امْرَأَتِهِ فَارًّا فَلَامَتْهُ وَعَجَّزَتْهُ وَعَيَّرَتْهُ بِالْفِرَارِ فَقَالَ

✧ ʿIkrimah b. Abī Jahl fled, heading for Yemen, while Umm al-Ḥakīm bt. al-Ḥārith b. Hishām—who was then a Muslim and was married to ʿIkrimah b. Abī Jahl—came and asked the Messenger of God ﷺ for permission to seek her husband. He permitted her and granted him safe-conduct. She set out with a Byzantine slave of hers, who tried to seduce her. She kept giving him hope and drawing him on until she reached some people of ʿAkk and sought their help against him, so they detained him. She caught up with her husband in part of Tihāmah; he had boarded a ship. When he sat in it, he called upon al-Lāt and al-ʿUzzā. The people of the ship said: "No one may pass here who calls upon anything except God alone, sincerely." ʿIkrimah said: "By God, if He is in the sea, He is certainly also on land alone." So he swore by God that he would return to Muḥammad ﷺ. ʿIkrimah returned with his wife and entered upon the Messenger of God ﷺ to give him allegiance, and he accepted it from him. A man from Hudhayl entered upon his wife fleeing when Banū Bakr were defeated, and she blamed him, deemed him weak, and reproached him for fleeing. He said:
