✧ From ʿUqbah b. ʿAmir, who was the keeper of the Messenger of God ﷺ’s gray mule and led it during journeys, he said: I led the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was on his mount for part of the night. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said, “Make the camel kneel.” I made it kneel, and he dismounted. Then he said, “Mount, O ʿUqbah.” I said, “Glory be to God! On your mount?” He ordered me, saying, “Mount.” I said the same again and repeated that several times until I feared I would disobey the Messenger of God ﷺ. So I mounted his riding camel. Then he urged his she-camel and it rose. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ called me at one of the mountain passes and said, “O ʿUqbah, shall I not teach you two surahs from the Qur’an that are the best of the Qur’an, or among the best of it?” I said, “Yes, may my father and mother be your ransom.” He taught me the two protective surahs (al-Muʿawwidhatayn). Then he said, “O ʿUqbah, when you see dawn, inform me.” When I saw dawn, I said, “O Messenger of God, this is dawn.” He made his camel kneel, performed ablution, stood for prayer, then took my hand and placed me on his right. He recited those two surahs in the dawn prayer, then turned to me and said, “O ʿUqbah, recite them whenever you rise and whenever you sleep.”
