حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثَنَا عَارِمٌ أَبُو النُّعْمَانِ ثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ عَنْ مُجَالِدٍ عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ قَالَ
لَمَّا خَرَجَ عَلِيٌّ إِلَى صِفِّينَ اسْتَخْلَفَ أَبَا مَسْعُودٍ عَلَى الْكُوفَةِ وَكَانَ رِجَالٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكُوفَةِ اسْتَخْفَوْا عَلِيًّا فَلَمَّا خَرَجَ ظَهَرُوا وَكَانَ نَاسٌ يَأْتُونَ أَبَا مَسْعُودٍ فَيَقُولُونَ قَدْ وَاللهِ أَهْلَكَ اللهُ أعْدَاءَهُ وَأَظْفَرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فَيَقُولُ أَبُو مَسْعُودٍ «إنِّي وَاللهِ مَا أَعُدُّهُ ظَفَرًا وَلَا عَافِيَةً أَنْ تَظْهَرَ إِحْدَى الطَّائِفَتَيْنِ عَلَى الْأُخْرَى» قَالُوا فَمَهْ؟ قَالَ «يَكُونُ بَيْنَ الْقَوْمِ صُلْحٌ» فَلَمَّا قَدِمَ عَلِيٌّ ذَكَرُوا ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ «اعْتَزِلْ عَمَلَنَا» قَالَ وَذَاكَ مَهْ؟ قَالَ «إنَّا وَجَدْنَاكَ لَا تَعْقِلُ عَقْلَةً» قَالَ «أَمَّا أَنَا فَقَدْ بَقِيَ مِنْ عَقْلِي مَا أعْلَمُ أَنَّ الْآخِرَ شَرٌّ»

✧ When ʿAli went out to Siffin, he appointed Abu Masʿud as his deputy over Kufah. There were men from the people of Kufah who had hidden themselves from ʿAli, and when he departed they appeared. People would come to Abu Masʿud and say, "By Allah, Allah has destroyed his enemies and granted victory to the believers." Abu Masʿud would say, "By Allah, I do not consider it a victory or well-being that one of the two parties prevails over the other." They said, "Then what?" He said, "There will be reconciliation between the people." When ʿAli arrived, they mentioned that to him, and ʿAli said, "Withdraw from our work." He said, "And why is that?" He said, "We have found you not understanding a sound understanding." He said, "As for me, there remains from my understanding what lets me know that the latter is worse."
