✧ From Abu ʿImran al-Jawni, I think only from Anas b. Malik, he said: Wahb b. ʿUmayr was present at Uhud as a disbeliever and was wounded, so he was among the slain. A man from the Ansar passed by him, recognized him, placed his sword in his belly until it came out of his back, then left him. When night fell and the cold struck him, he made his way to Makkah and recovered. He and Safwan b. Umayyah gathered in the Hijr, and Wahb said, 'Were it not for my dependents and a debt upon me, I would love to be the one who kills Muhammad myself.' Safwan said to him, 'How would you do it?' He said, 'I am a swift man whom no one can catch. I will come to him and deceive him, then strike him with the sword and join the horses, and no one will catch me.' Safwan said to him, 'Your dependents with my dependents, and your debt upon me.' So he went out, sharpening his sword and poisoning it, then set out for Madinah, intending only to kill the Prophet ﷺ. When he reached Madinah, ʿUmar b. al-Khattab saw him and was troubled and distressed. He said to the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, 'I have seen Wahb, and his arrival alarms me, for he is a treacherous man. Surround your Prophet.' The Muslims surrounded the Prophet ﷺ. Wahb came and stood before the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'May you have a pleasant morning, O Muhammad.' He said, 'Allah has replaced it for us with something better.' He said, 'I recall you used to say it while you were pleased.' The Prophet ﷺ said to him, 'What has brought you here?' He said, 'I came to ransom your captives.' He said, 'What is the matter with the sword?' He said, 'Indeed, we carried it on the Day of Badr but did not succeed or prevail.' He said, 'What is the thing you said to Safwan in the Hijr: "Were it not for my dependents and a debt upon me, I would be the one who killed Muhammad myself"?' The Prophet ﷺ informed him of his affair. Wahb said, 'Hah! How did you say?' He repeated it to him. Wahb said, 'You used to tell us news of the people of the earth, and we disbelieved you. Now I see you tell news of the people of heaven. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that you are the Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'O Messenger of Allah, give me your turban.' The Prophet ﷺ gave him his turban. Then he went out to Makkah. ʿUmar said, 'He came while he was more hateful to me than a pig, then he returned while he was dearer to me than some of my own children.'
