✧ He said, when the people stirred up trouble concerning ʿUthman's affair: 'O people, do not kill this old man but demand that he rectify matters, for no nation kills its prophet and then enjoys sound affairs until the blood of seventy thousand of its people is shed, and no nation kills its caliph and then enjoys sound affairs until the blood of forty thousand of its people is shed.' But they paid no heed to what he said and killed him. Then he sat in ʿAli's path and said: 'Where are you heading?' He replied: 'I am heading to the land of Iraq.' He said: 'Do not go to Iraq. Stick to the pulpit of the Messenger of God ﷺ.' Then the people from among ʿAli's companions sprang at him and were about to harm him, but ʿAli said: 'Leave him, for he is a man from us, the People of the House.' When ʿAli was killed, Ibn Salam said to Ibn Maʿqil: 'This is the head of the forty thousand, and upon it there will be a reconciliation. No nation kills its prophet except that seventy thousand are killed because of him, and no nation kills its caliph except that forty thousand are killed because of him.'
