✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said one day, “Who will deal with Khalid b. Nubayh, a man of Hudhayl?” He was at that time at ʿArafah. ʿAbdullah said: I said, “I will, O Messenger of Allah. Describe him to me.” He said, “If you saw him, you would fear him.” I said, “By the One who has honored you, I have never feared anything.” So I went out until I met him in the mountains of ʿArafah before the sun set. I met him and was struck with fear of him, and I knew then, when I feared him, what the Prophet ﷺ had said. He said, “Who is the man?” I said, “One seeking a need. Is there a place to spend the night?” He said, “Yes, follow me.” He said: I went out following his trail, prayed ʿAsr as two light rakʿahs, then went out, fearing that he would see me. Then I caught up with him and struck him with the sword. Then I entered the mountain and hid until the people had gone. Then I came out and went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Madinah and informed him of the news. Muhammad b. Kaʿb said: The Prophet ﷺ gave him a short staff and said, “Lean on this until you meet me with it on the Day of Resurrection. The fewest people on that day will be those who lean on staffs.” Muhammad b. Kaʿb said: When ʿAbdullah b. Unays died, he ordered that it be placed on his stomach, and he was shrouded over it, and it was buried with him.
