✧ I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: “Who will take this letter of mine to the tyrant of Byzantium?” He presented it to them three times. Then he said, “Who will go and have Paradise?” A man from the Helpers called ʿUbayd Allah b. ʿAbd al-Khaliq said, “I will take it, and I will have Paradise if I perish in that cause?” He said, “Yes, you will have Paradise whether you deliver it, or are killed, or perish. God has made Paradise obligatory for you.” He set out with the letter of the Prophet ﷺ until he reached the tyrant and said, “I am a messenger of the Messenger of the Lord of the worlds.” He was granted permission and entered upon him. The tyrant of Byzantium recognized that he had brought the truth from a sent prophet. Then he presented to him the letter of the Prophet ﷺ. He gathered the Byzantines before him and presented it to them, but they disliked what he brought. One man among them believed in it and was killed upon his belief. Then the man returned to the Prophet ﷺ and told him what had happened with him and the killing of the man. The Prophet ﷺ said at that: “God will raise him as a nation alone,” referring to that slain man.
