✧ I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ: he came to a cloth merchant and bought a shirt from him for four dirhams. He went out wearing it, and there was a man from the Helpers who said, “O Messenger of God ﷺ, clothe me with a shirt; may God clothe you from the garments of Paradise.” So he took off the shirt and clothed him with it. Then he returned to the shopkeeper and bought a shirt from him for four dirhams, and two dirhams remained with him. Then he came upon a girl in the road weeping, and he said, “What makes you weep?” She said, “O Messenger of God, my family gave me two dirhams to buy flour with them, and I lost them.” The Prophet ﷺ gave her the remaining two dirhams. Then she turned away weeping, and he called her and said, “What makes you weep, when you have taken the two dirhams?” She said, “I fear they will beat me.” So he walked with her to her family, gave the greeting, and they recognized his voice. Then he returned and gave the greeting, then returned and gave the greeting, then returned a third time, and they responded. He said, “Did you hear the first greeting?” They said, “Yes, but we loved that you increase us in greeting. What has brought you here, may our father and mother be ransom for you?” He said, “This girl feared that you would beat her.” Her master said, “She is free for the sake of God, because of your walking with her.” The Prophet of God ﷺ gave them glad tidings of good and Paradise, then said, “God has indeed blessed the ten dirhams: God clothed His Prophet with a shirt, and a man from the Helpers with a shirt, and God freed a neck through them. I praise God, for it is He who provided us this by His power.”
