حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الزِّنْبَاعِ رَوْحُ بْنُ الْفَرَجِ ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عُفَيْرٍ عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ عَنْ ثَابِتِ بْنِ قَيْسِ بْنِ شَمَّاسٍ

أَنَّهُ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَقَدْ خَشِيتُ أَنْ أَكُونَ قَدْ هَلَكْتُ قَالَ «بِمَ؟» قَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ يَنْهَانَا أَنْ نُحْمَدَ بِمَا لَمْ نَفْعَلْ وَأَجِدُنِي أُحِبُّ الْحَمْدَ وَنَهَانَا عَنِ الْخُيَلَاءِ وَأَنَا امْرُؤٌ أُحِبُّ الْجَمَالَ وَنَهَانَا أَنْ نَرْفَعَ أَصْوَاتَنَا فَوْقَ صَوْتِكَ وَأَنَا امْرُؤٌ جَهِيرُ الصَّوْتِ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «يَا ثَابِتُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ أَمَا تَرْضَى أَنْ تَعِيشَ حَمِيدًا وتُقْتَلَ شَهِيدًا وَتَدْخُلَ الْجَنَّةَ؟»

✧ He said, "O Messenger of God, I fear that I have been destroyed." He said, "By what?" He said, "God forbids us to be praised for what we have not done, and I find myself loving praise; He forbade us arrogance, and I am a man who loves beauty; and He forbade us to raise our voices above your voice, and I am a man with a loud voice." The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him, "O Thabit b. Qays, would you not be pleased to live praised, be killed as a martyr, and enter the Garden?"
