حَدَّثَنَا مُطَّلِبُ بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ الْأَزْدِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ حَدَّثَنِي الْهِقْلُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ أَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ أَنَّ ثَابِتَ بْنَ قَيْسٍ الْأَنْصَارِيَّ قَالَ
يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَقَدْ خَشِيتُ أَنْ أَكُونَ قَدْ هَلَكْتُ فَقَالَ لَهُ «لِمَ؟» قَالَ نَهَى اللهُ الْمَرْءَ أَنْ يُحِبَّ أَنْ يُحْمَدَ بِمَا لَمْ يَفْعَلْ وَأَجِدُنِي أُحِبُّ الْحَمْدَ وَنَهَانَا عَنِ الْخُيَلَاءِ وَأَجِدُنِي أُحِبُّ الْجَمَالَ وَنَهَانَا أَنْ نَرْفَعَ أَصْوَاتَنَا فَوْقَ صَوْتِكَ وَإِنِّي امْرُؤٌ جَهِيرُ الصَّوْتِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «يَا ثَابِتُ أَمَا تَرْضَى أَنْ تَعِيشَ حَمِيدًا وتُقْتَلُ شَهِيدًا وَتَدْخُلَ الْجَنَّةَ؟» قَالَ بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَعَاشَ حَمِيدًا وَقُتِلَ يَوْمَ مُسَيْلِمَةَ

✧ "O Messenger of God, I fear that I have been destroyed." He said to him, "Why?" He said, "God forbade a man to love to be praised for what he has not done, and I find myself loving praise; He forbade us arrogance, and I find myself loving beauty; and He forbade us to raise our voices above your voice, and I am a man with a loud voice." The Messenger of God ﷺ said, "O Thabit, would you not be pleased to live praised, be killed as a martyr, and enter the Garden?" He said, "Yes, O Messenger of God." So he lived praised and was killed on the day of Musaylima.
