حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى بْنِ حَمْزَةَ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ أَبِيهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عَمْرٍو الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ حَدَّثَنِي ثَابِتُ بْنُ قَيْسِ بْنِ شَمَّاسٍ قَالَ

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ وَاللهِ لَقَدْ خَشِيتُ أَنْ أَكُونَ قَدْ هَلَكْتُ قَالَ «بِمَ؟» قُلْتُ نَهَى اللهُ الْمَرْءَ أَنْ يُحْمَدَ بِمَا لَمْ يَفْعَلْ وَأَجِدُنِي أُحِبُّ الْحَمْدَ وَنَهَى الله عَنِ الْخُيَلَاءِ وَأَجِدُنِي أُحِبُّ الْخُيَلَاءَ وَنَهَى اللهُ أَنْ نَرْفَعَ أَصْوَاتَنَا فَوْقَ صَوْتِكَ وَأَنَا امْرُؤٌ جَهِيرُ الصَّوْتِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «أَلَا تَرْضَى أَنْ تَعِيشَ حَمِيدًا وتُقْتَلَ شَهِيدًا وَتَدْخُلَ الْجَنَّةَ» قَالَ بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَعَاشَ حَمِيدًا وَقُتِلَ شَهِيدًا يَوْمَ مُسَيْلِمَةَ

Translation

✧ He said, "I said, 'O Messenger of God, by God, I fear that I have been destroyed.' He said, 'By what?' I said, 'God forbade a man to be praised for what he has not done, and I find myself loving praise; God forbade arrogance, and I find myself loving arrogance; and God forbade us to raise our voices above your voice, and I am a man with a loud voice.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said, 'Would you not be pleased to live praised, be killed as a martyr, and enter the Garden?' He said, 'Yes, O Messenger of God.' So he lived praised and was killed as a martyr on the day of Musaylima."
