حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ثنا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ بُرْقَانَ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ الْأَصَمِّ أَنَّ الضَّبَّ ذُكِرَ عِنْدَ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فَقَالَ
بَعْضُ جُلَسَائِهِ أُتِيَ بِهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَمْ يُحِلَّهُ وَلَمْ يُحَرِّمْهُ فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ بِئْسَمَا تَقُولُونُ إِنَّمَا بُعِثَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مُحِلًّا وَمُحَرِّمًا إِنَّمَا جَاءَتْ أُمُّ حُفَيْدٍ بِنْتُ الْحَارِثِ تَزُورُ أُخْتَهَا مَيْمُونَةَ بِنْتَ الْحَارِثِ زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَجَاءُوا مَعَهُمْ بِطَعَامٍ فِيهِ لَحْمُ ضَبٍّ فَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بَعْدَمَا أَغْسَقَ يَعْنِي أَظْلَمَ فَقَالَتْ مَيْمُونَةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّهُ لَحْمُ ضَبٍّ فَأَمْسَكَ عَنْهُ فَأَمْسَكَتْ عَنْهُ مَيْمُونَةُ قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ وَأَكَلَهُ مَنْ كَانَ عِنْدَهُ وَلَوْ كَانَ حَرَامًا نَهَاهُمْ عَنْهُ وَقَالَ «إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ بِأَرْضِنَا وَنَحْنُ نَعَافُهُ»

✧ Some of his companions said: It was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he neither declared it lawful nor unlawful. Ibn Abbas said: “How bad is what you say! The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sent only as one who makes lawful and makes unlawful. Umm Hufayd bint al-Harith came to visit her sister Maymunah bint al-Harith, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ. They brought with them food containing the meat of a dabb lizard. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came after it had grown dark—meaning it had become night. Maymunah said: O Messenger of Allah, it is dabb meat. So he held back from it, and Maymunah held back from it. Ibn Abbas said: And those with him ate it. If it had been unlawful, he would have forbidden them from it, and he said: “It is not found in our land, and we find it distasteful.”
