حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِمْرَانَ ثنا أَبُو حَفْصٍ عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ ثنا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ الْعَبَّادَانِيُّ ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ زَيْدٍ عَنْ يُوسُفَ بْنِ مِهْرَانَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ
كُنَّا فِي حَلْقَةٍ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ نَتَذَاكَرُ فَضَائِلَ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ أَيُّهُمْ أَفْضَلُ؟ فَذَكَرْنَا نُوحًا وَطُولَ عِبَادَتِهِ رَبَّهُ وَذَكَرْنَا إِبْرَاهِيمَ خَلِيلَ الرَّحْمَنِ وَذَكَرْنَا مُوسَى كَلِيمَ اللهِ وَذَكَرْنَا عِيسَى ابْنَ مَرْيَمَ وَذَكَرْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَبَيْنَا نَحْنُ كَذَلِكَ إِذْ خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «مَا تَذْكُرُونَ بَيْنَكُمْ؟» قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهُ تَذَاكَرْنَا فَضَائِلَ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ أَيُّهُمْ أَفْضَلُ؟ ذَكَرْنَا نُوحًا وَطُولَ عِبَادَتِهِ وَذَكَرْنَا إِبْرَاهِيمَ خَلِيلَ الرَّحْمَنِ وَذَكَرْنَا مُوسَى كَلِيمَ الرَّحْمَنِ وَذَكَرْنَا عِيسَى ابْنَ مَرْيَمَ وَذَكَرْنَاكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ فَمَنْ فَضَّلْتُمْ؟ قُلْنَا فَضَلَّنَاكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ بَعَثَكَ اللهُ إِلَى النَّاسِ كَافَّةً وَغَفَرَ لَكَ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِكَ وَمَا تَأَخَّرَ وَأَنْتَ خَاتَمُ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَمَا إِنَّهُ لَا يَنْبَغِي لِأَحَدٍ أَنْ يَقُولَ أَنَا خَيْرٌ مِنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ زَكَرِيَّا قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ وَمِنْ أَيْنَ ذَاكَ؟ قَالَ أَمَا سَمِعْتُمُ اللهَ كَيْفَ وَصَفَهُ فِي الْقُرْآنِ فَقَالَ {يَا يَحْيَى خُذِ الْكِتَابَ بِقُوَّةٍ وَآتَيْنَاهُ الْحُكْمَ صَبِيًّا} فَقَرَأَ حَتَّى بَلَغَ {سَيِّدًا وَحَصُورًا وَنَبِيًّا مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ} لَمْ يَعْمَلْ سَيِّئَةً قَطُّ وَلَمْ يَهُمَّ بِهَا

✧ We were in a circle in the mosque discussing the virtues of the prophets, which of them is best. We mentioned Noah and the length of his worship of his Lord, and we mentioned Abraham, the friend of the Merciful, and we mentioned Moses, God's interlocutor, and we mentioned Jesus son of Mary, and we mentioned the Messenger of God ﷺ. While we were doing that, the Messenger of God ﷺ came out to us and said, "What are you discussing among yourselves?" We said, "O Messenger of God, we were discussing the virtues of the prophets, which of them is best. We mentioned Noah and the length of his worship, we mentioned Abraham, the friend of the Merciful, we mentioned Moses, the interlocutor of the Merciful, we mentioned Jesus son of Mary, and we mentioned you, O Messenger of God." He said, "So whom did you prefer?" We said, "We preferred you, O Messenger of God, because God sent you to all mankind, forgave you your past and future sins, and you are the seal of the prophets." The Messenger of God ﷺ said, "Indeed, it is not appropriate for anyone to say, 'I am better than Yahya b. Zakariyya.'" We said, "O Messenger of God, how so?" He said, "Did you not hear how God described him in the Qur'an? He said: 'O Yahya, take the Scripture with strength.' And We gave him judgment while yet a boy' [Q 19:12]. Then he recited until he reached: 'a master, chaste, and a prophet from among the righteous' [Q 19:13–14]. He never committed an evil deed, nor did he intend one."
