✧ I traveled with Ibn Abbas from Madinah to Syria and asked him: Did the Prophet ﷺ leave a will? He said: "When the Prophet ﷺ fell ill with the illness in which he died, he was in the house of Aishah. He said: 'Call Ali for me.' She said: 'Shall we not call Abu Bakr, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'Call him.' Then Hafsah said: 'Shall we not call Umar?' He said: 'Call him.' Then Umm al-Fadl said: 'Shall we not call al-Abbas, your uncle?' He said: 'Call him.' When they had gathered, he raised his head and did not see Ali, so he remained silent and did not speak. Umar said: 'Rise and leave the Prophet ﷺ, for if he had a need from us he would have mentioned it.' He did that three times, then said: 'Let Abu Bakr lead the people in prayer.' Aishah said: 'Abu Bakr was present, so Abu Bakr came forward to lead the people in prayer, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ felt some relief, so he went out leaning between two men. When the people sensed him, they glorified Allah, and Abu Bakr moved to step back, but the Prophet ﷺ gestured to him: 'Stay where you are.' The Prophet ﷺ began the recitation from where Abu Bakr had ended, with Abu Bakr standing and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sitting. Abu Bakr followed the Prophet ﷺ, and the people followed Abu Bakr. The Messenger of Allah did not finish the prayer until he became very heavy, so he went out leaning between two men, with his feet dragging on the ground. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died, and he did not leave a will."
