✧ The Prophet of Allah ﷺ said: "I will surely send a man whom Allah will not disgrace." He sent for ʿAli while he was at the mill grinding, and none of you would have been grinding. They brought him with sore eyes, and he said: O Prophet of Allah, I can hardly see. He blew into his eyes, shook the banner three times, then handed it to him. Victory was granted to him, and he brought Safiyyah bt. Huyayy. Then he said to his cousins: "Which of you will be my protector in this world and the Hereafter?" three times, until he passed by the last of them. ʿAli said: O Prophet of Allah, I am your protector in this world and the Hereafter. The Prophet ﷺ said: "You are my protector in this world and the Hereafter." He said: And he sent Abu Bakr with Surat al-Tawbah, and he sent ʿAli after him. Abu Bakr said: O ʿAli, perhaps Allah and His Prophet are displeased with me. ʿAli said: No, but the Prophet of Allah ﷺ said: "It is not fitting that anyone should convey from me except a man from me, and I am from him." He said: And the Prophet of Allah ﷺ placed his garment over ʿAli, Fatimah, al-Hasan, and al-Husayn, and said: "Allah only desires to remove impurity from you, O People of the House, and to purify you thoroughly." And he was the first to embrace Islam after Khadijah among the people. He said: And ʿAli purchased his own life; he wore the Prophet's ﷺ garment, then stood in his place. He said: The polytheists were throwing stones at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Abu Bakr came and said: Come to me, O Messenger of Allah—Abu Bakr thought he was the Prophet of Allah. ʿAli said: The Prophet of Allah ﷺ has set out toward the well of Maymun, so catch up with him. Abu Bakr set out and entered the cave with him. ʿAli kept throwing stones as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to throw, writhing with his head wrapped in the garment, not removing it until morning. Then he uncovered his head when morning came, and they said: You are indeed despicable. Your companion, when we throw stones at him, does not writhe, but you writhe. We found that strange. He said: Then he set out with the people on the expedition of Tabuk. ʿAli said to him: Shall I go out with you? The Prophet ﷺ said: "No." So ʿAli wept. The Prophet of Allah ﷺ said to him: "Are you not pleased to be to me as Harun was to Musa, except that you are not a prophet? It is not fitting that I should go unless you are my deputy." He said: And he said to him: "You are the protector of every believer after me." He said: And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ closed the doors of the mosque except ʿAli's door, so he could enter the mosque while in a state of major ritual impurity, since it was his path and he had no other path. He said: And he said: "Whoever's mawla I am, ʿAli is his mawla." Ibn ʿAbbas said: Allah has informed us in the Quran that He is pleased with them, with the companions of the tree, knowing what is in their hearts. Did He tell us that He became displeased with them afterwards? And he said: The Prophet of Allah ﷺ said to ʿUmar when he said: Will you permit me to strike his neck—meaning Hatib: "Would you have done it? And what do you know? Perhaps Allah has looked upon the people of Badr and said: Do whatever you wish?"
