✧ Waththab, who was one of those whom Uthman ؓ had freed and who used to stand before Uthman, informed me: Uthman sent me and I summoned al-Ashtar for him. Ibn Awn said: I think he said: I placed a cushion for the Commander of the Faithful, and he had a cushion. He said: "O Ashtar, what do the people want from me?" He said: Three things, one of which is unavoidable. He said: "What are they?" He said: They give you the choice between handing over their affair to them, saying, 'This is your affair, so choose for it whom you will,' and between exacting retribution from yourself. If you refuse these two, then the people will fight you. He said: "Is one of them unavoidable?" He said: One of them is unavoidable. He said: "As for handing over their affair to them, I would never remove a garment with which I have been clothed." He said: And al-Hasan said: By Allah, to be brought forward and have my neck struck is dearer to me than to remove the affair of the Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ from one another. Ibn Awn said: This is more like the words of Uthman. As for exacting retribution from myself, by Allah, I know that my two companions before me were punished, and my body cannot withstand retaliation. As for killing me, by Allah, if you kill me, you will never love one another after me, and you will never fight an enemy together after me. Then al-Ashtar stood up and left. We waited and said: Perhaps the people... Then a man came who looked like a wolf, peered in from a door, and then went back. Then Muhammad b. Abi Bakr came with thirteen men and reached Uthman ؓ. He grabbed his beard and said with it, and said with it, until I heard the chattering of his teeth, and said: What did Muawiya avail you? What did Ibn Amir avail you? What did your letters avail you? He said: "Let go of my beard, O son of my brother. Let go of my beard, O son of my brother." He said: I saw him summon a man from the group with his eye, and the man went to him with a small spear and struck him with it on his head. I said: Then what? He said: Then they all attacked him, by Allah, until they killed him.
